Ginninderra Wildcats produced one of their strongest performances of the season with a 5–1 win over Butetown Rovers at Valley Avenue Stadium in front of 49,589 supporters. With precious few rounds remaining, the Wildcats are still fighting to secure Premiership football for next season after a much improved second half of the campaign.

The evening did not begin especially well for the home side. Just five minutes in, Cotton’s header from a free kick slipped through Martin’s hands and into the net to give Butetown an early lead. Moments later Lakalini nearly doubled the advantage with an ambitious lob that drifted narrowly wide of the post.

Ginninderra responded positively though and gradually took control of the match through midfield. Gaborone levelled in the 18th minute with a powerful strike from distance that gave Lytsell no chance.

The Wildcats continued to create chances throughout the first half. Aydelotte twice tested Lytsell, Beltran forced multiple saves, and Garriock was influential finding space between the lines.

The breakthrough came in the 35th minute after Pellegrino produced an audacious rabona pass in midfield which eventually found Perupato arriving forward. The defender smashed his finish into the net before celebrating enthusiastically with the home crowd.

Butetown altered shape immediately afterwards in an attempt to regain control, but Ginninderra struck again shortly after half time. Gaborone flicked the ball on into the path of Gunk, who finished well to make it 3–1 in the 48th minute.

Beltran then added a fourth in the 57th minute after good work from U_Staff down the flank. The striker’s finish flew past Lytsell and effectively settled the contest.

Despite the scoreline, Butetown still created openings of their own. Varga headed over from a good position and Cotton continued to threaten in transition, but Ginninderra’s back line recovered well after the difficult opening exchanges.

Craig introduced Tominac late and shifted the side into a more defensive structure for the closing stages, with both Gaborone and Maracle dropping deeper to help see out the match comfortably.

Garriock completed the scoring in the 87th minute after another strong performance in midfield. The eventual man of the match finished neatly after being found by Maracle to cap off an impressive attacking display from the Wildcats.

The statistics reflected Ginninderra’s control across most of the evening. The Wildcats recorded 20 attempts on goal, including 17 on target, while also edging possession and producing 18 key passes. The performance was reflected in the Premiership Team of the Week, with Garriock, Gaborone, Maracle and Beltran all selected following the victory.

Ginninderra will next host Holcombe Hotshots in another critical fixture for the Canberra side as they continue their push for survival. The reverse fixture finished in a 3–0 win for Holcombe earlier in the season and the Hotshots arrive in solid form, taking 10 points from their last six matches compared to Ginninderra’s eight.

Holcombe are still expected to be without key midfielders Baskin and Ardilles, which may complicate Adrian Hull’s planning given three of Ginninderra’s four midfielders were named in the Team of the Week following Saturday’s performance.

Whilst it's starting to get cold in Canberra as winter takes it's grip on the eastern seaboard of Australia, you should get your thermals out and come down to be part of another bumper crowd this Saturday.

True football sickos will be able to partake in both the SSL match and then kick-on's at a number of pubs and clubs around the city as the A-League grand final plays out between Auckland and Sydney at 6.10pm AEST / 9.10am GMT.

The writer doesn't rate either team - one is Sydney and the other is managed by an ex-Sydney goon - but if you are desperate for any sort of fudebol over breakfast in the UK, this is a good fit, and it's great fun football without any spying on other teams (plus we get treated like adults and can have a beer in the stands)
