Dear Arts Folks et al,
Here is a possible proposal to NSO for a concert on the 7th of January at 6:00 pm in the church.  The deadline is Friday, September 23, as in 36 hours away.  If you have comments, suggestions, corrections, or other missed angles that need air time, please feel free to respond, either through Google docs or this email attachment; just do it soon!  Please respond to all so that everyone can be part of this effort.  Thanks for your help, and we will hopefully be able to make the deadline and get a favorable response.
Michael

Also, I do not have Michael Salmon's email here at work. Could someone get him involved in this conversation, too? Thanks.

Just heard about this. the National Symphony Orchestra is planning programs in Columbia Heights in early January. They want applications for their presence at various venues by Friday, Sept. 23. We have a week, if we can come up with an idea, to apply. The idea would be to get kids, especially, to a performance/workshop with some sort of focus. Might be an opportunity for work with other neighborhood groups or our space users. See http://www.kennedy-center.org/nso/community/NSO_iyn.cfm for more details, and for a link to the application form. If we need to discuss, this Sunday would be the time!

Thank you for this excellent proposal, Michael. I think you have considered and included the breadth of our community. The only problem I see from the SSI point of view is that the night before, January 6th, is the proposed Epiphany happening at SSI with the Eucharist and the King’s Procession. Two days in a row, nay, three (including Sunday) might cut down on attendance from SSI congregation. But, it would just be a weekend of celebration and that would be fine by me. I am sure it would draw the wider community.  As Frank pointed out when we were talking about this idea, we would have to find a solution to the lack of light so that musicians could read their scores. But I think that’s a small obstacle.

It would be very exciting to hear such lively sound in our acoustically wonderful space. Can’t wait.

Great proposal Michael and I like the way you have emphasized the connections to the larger community. In the liturgy planning group meeting we talked about involving kids in some way. Is there any way to include youth participation in the conceptual framework of the proposal that you have prepared?

I understand Sarabeth’s concern but maybe we can make this part of a Epiphany Weekend Celebration-just a thought.

Hello all,
Many are asking if there is a way to include young people.  I teach middle school, so I couldn't agree more.  We don't seem to have any sort of "group" that I can see to include.  It would seem more random.  Could it be a "show and tell" at the end of the concert itself?  Children could be invited to the front to see, hear more, and perhaps, touch?  I don't know quite what other angle to play.  Anyone have thoughts?  Thoughts have to be in soon.  Less than 30 hours to go.

I think the show and tell would be great…the “petting zoo for instruments,” I think NSO’s publicity stated it that way. There are lots of schools around: Lincoln Middle, Powell Elementary, Bell HS, Capital City PCS and then we have kids from Words, Beats and Life, Brainfood, Misa Alegria. Would probably not want to make invitation so broad that the children would comprise most of the congregation…but, I don’t know. We probably don’t have to hammer that out just yet.

Mary A, the date is only a small concern to me…While I think it may affect SSI attendance, I don’t think it would impact attendance from the broader community. I would love to celebrate the whole weekend.

I think this is an excellent idea, a well written proposal, and a wonderful opportunity.  It is, in my opinion, exactly that kind of thing that the Arts Collaborative should be doing, and one that we have long aspired to!

Thanks, Michael, and thanks to Joseph for bringing this to our attention!

I think we can get around the somewhat over-programmed weekend, provided there is no really inclement weather (and there is not likely to be that early in January).  Besides, this is primarily for the community, and folks will always pick and choose what they want to participate in.  The Epiphany celebration is primarily for the parish.  We can, if we wish, build the whole weekend as “Light Celebration”, tongue-in-cheek of course.  Or, since it really is close to New Year’s, a New Year Opener...or something like that.  Sarabeth is correct about the lighting, however.  We’d better have that figured out before the NSO comes to take a look at the space or it will be a deal breaker, I’m afraid.

Two comments:

I know that We Are Family was preparing its own proposal; I gave them Joe's contact info. Does the 6pm line in the proposal reflect a collaboration with them?  If so, I think pointing out that this is  a collaborative effort and perhaps having it come jointly from both organizations might enhance its appeal.

Second, I know of no easy solution to the lighting issue. I hope someone does!
