CAELinux 2018 is based on xubuntu 16.04 but has engineering-oriented
packages, like OpenFOAM and CAD.

I installed to hard drive (an M.2 SSD on USB actually, but that
shouldn't matter), and apt get install sshuttle seemed to work, but it
seems to be a python3.5 compatibility issue when I run it.

The workaround is to install the package from 18.04 bionic, for example

https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/all/sshuttle/download

shows me the mirrors, pick one, and ...

$ wget --force-directories -c
'https://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/s/sshuttle/sshuttle_0.78.3-1_all.deb'
&& sudo dpkg -i
mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/s/sshuttle/sshuttle_0.78.3-1_all.deb

installs it, and it works now.
