A Note from Assembly Member O'Donnell
With winter in full swing, the 2013-2014 Assembly session has begun. I
am honored
to announce that I was recently appointed the Chair of the Correction Committee.
After serving as Chair of the Ethics Committee for the past three
years, I'm very
excited to tackle this new challenge and work to ensure our state's correctional
system is as fair and effective as possible.
In our community, due to the serious health threat still posed by the flu virus
epidemic, I am sponsoring a second Free Flu Shot Clinic this coming
Friday, February
8th. Even though it is later in the winter than many are used to
getting their flu
shots, if you haven't gotten yours yet, it's not too late to protect
yourself. See
the box below for more information on how to reserve your shot!
I would also like to share an update regarding the drilling practice
of hydraulic
fracturing or "hydrofracking" in New York State. Since the Assembly
reconvened in
January, I have continued my long-standing advocacy in the fight
against this dangerous
drilling technique. As a member of the Environmental Conservation
Committee, I attended
a hydrofracking hearing on January 10th, where I was able to question
economists,
scientists, and other industry experts. The number of comments and
amount of research
indicating that hydrofracking cannot be safely done was staggering.
Most notably,
when I asked a former Mobil Oil executive, Louis Allstadt, whether or
not he could
promise that the hydrofracking gas wells would not leak, he responded
that he was
unable to do so. I believe this was a striking admission that points directly to
the significant risks and dangers inherent in the drilling practice.
Most recently, on February 5th I spoke at Assembly Member Barbara Lifton's press
conference calling for a thorough, transparent health study of the
hydrofracking
health process. This information, which we deserve, has not been made available
up to this point. It must be.
Finally, I have added a new feature to the online version of these
Monthly Updates:
a compilation of community events calendars. I am often contacted by
constituents
asking if there will be events occurring in our community, but
unfortunately there
are too many events to put in one list. So, now these calendars can all be found
in one place in the Monthly Update. I hope it is useful! If you would

Haven't gotten your yearly flu shot yet? It's not too late!
This Friday, February 8th, Assembly Member O'Donnell will be sponsoring a second
Free Flu Shot Clinic in response to the epidemic that has hit New York this flu
season. The shots will be administered at the Goddard Riverside

2 PM.

Public high school acceptance notices have been delayed until March 15th due to
Hurricane Sandy.
Kindergarten applications are due Friday, March 1st, 2013. Families
can apply at
their zoned school, and all applications received by the end of the day on March
1st will be treated the same. New York children who turn 5 years old
by December
31st, 2013, begin kindergarten in September 2013. Placement offers will be made
in early April. To accept an offer, families must pre-register at
schools between
April 8th and Friday, April 26th.
NYC CSD3 Magnet Schools invite you to join them for a parent social at
Five Lamps

5 -7 PM. Learn
about great new elementary and middle school choices in your
neighborhood and meet

The Social Security Administration has now expanded the services
available online
with a "My Social Security" account. This account is a personalized
online system
that people can use beginning in their working years and continuing

time they receive Social Security benefits.
More than 60 million Social Security beneficiaries and Supplemental

(SSI) recipients can now access their benefit verification letter,
payment history,
and earnings record instantly using their online account. Social

A Note from Assembly Member O'Donnell
With winter in full swing, the 2013-2014 Assembly session has begun. I
am honored
to announce that I was recently appointed the Chair of the Correction Committee.
After serving as Chair of the Ethics Committee for the past three
years, I'm very
excited to tackle this new challenge and work to ensure our state's correctional
system is as fair and effective as possible.
In our community, due to the serious health threat still posed by the flu virus
epidemic, I am sponsoring a second Free Flu Shot Clinic this coming
Friday, February
8th. Even though it is later in the winter than many are used to
getting their flu
shots, if you haven't gotten yours yet, it's not too late to protect
yourself. See
the box below for more information on how to reserve your shot!
I would also like to share an update regarding the drilling practice
of hydraulic
fracturing or "hydrofracking" in New York State. Since the Assembly
reconvened in
January, I have continued my long-standing advocacy in the fight
against this dangerous
drilling technique. As a member of the Environmental Conservation
Committee, I attended
a hydrofracking hearing on January 10th, where I was able to question
economists,
scientists, and other industry experts. The number of comments and
amount of research
indicating that hydrofracking cannot be safely done was staggering.
Most notably,
when I asked a former Mobil Oil executive, Louis Allstadt, whether or
not he could
promise that the hydrofracking gas wells would not leak, he responded
that he was
unable to do so. I believe this was a striking admission that points directly to
the significant risks and dangers inherent in the drilling practice.
Most recently, on February 5th I spoke at Assembly Member Barbara Lifton's press
conference calling for a thorough, transparent health study of the
hydrofracking
health process. This information, which we deserve, has not been made available
up to this point. It must be.
Finally, I have added a new feature to the online version of these
Monthly Updates:
a compilation of community events calendars. I am often contacted by
constituents
asking if there will be events occurring in our community, but
unfortunately there
are too many events to put in one list. So, now these calendars can all be found
in one place in the Monthly Update. I hope it is useful! If you would

31st, 2013, begin kindergarten in September 2013. Placement offers will be made
in early April. To accept an offer, families must pre-register at
schools between
April 8th and Friday, April 26th.
