Full Assembly to hear S.B. 1449! Dear Jonathan Perri: On June 22, the California Assembly Public Safety Committee approved Sen. Mark Leno’s bill, S.B. 1449, by a margin of 4–1. S.B. 1449, which would reclassify possession of under an ounce of marijuana from a misdemeanor to a civil infraction, passed the California Senate on June 3 by a margin of 21–13. Please call your Assembly member and seek her or his support for this bill. If S.B. 1449 is enacted, it would ensure that people accused of simple possession would not have to go before a judge, saving a substantial amount of tax dollars. In these cash-strapped times, legislators ought to be looking for cost savings wherever they can find them. S.B. 1449, if enacted, would also ensure that low-level marijuana offenders are no longer saddled with the burden of a criminal record and all of the collateral consequences that accompany such a conviction. The penalty imposed would remain a $100 fine. Take a moment of your time for constituent civil action and call your Assembly member in support of S.B. 1449. In other news, I’m happy to inform you that Sen. Ron Calderon has pulled SBX6 16 from consideration by the Senate Committee on Revenue and Taxation! You may recall that SBX6 16 sought to add a "sin tax" of up to 41% on all medical marijuana sold in the state of California. Thank you very much to those kind Californians who called their senators who are on the committee to express their concerns with that proposal. So lets keep that good news rolling. Call your Assembly member today and ask that he or she support reforming penalties for low-level marijuana possession offenses! Thank you much for your time, talents and energy. Sincerely,
Robert Capecchi
