Subject: Round 1 - Draw & Motions
Preliminary round 1 of the Singapore Secondary Schools Debating
Championships 2011 will be held on Friday 22nd February at
Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road), 60 Barker Road, Singapore 309919.
Every team will participate in one debate at this round. Debates will
be held at 6.00 pm, 7.15 pm or 8.30 pm.
In the attached document, you will find a list showing the time that
your team will be debating, the motion for the debate, and whether
your team will be in proposition or opposition. Pairings have been
determined by a random draw.
(If for any reason you cannot open the attached document, you can you
can call me at 8339-0475, or call the Tournament Administrator, Karen
Foo, at 6469-9439.)
On the day of the round, teams should arrive at Anglo-Chinese School
(Barker Road)'s campus at least 20 minutes before their debate is
scheduled to begin, in order to register and find the room for their
debate. All teams should be accompanied by at least one teacher from
their school. Team members should wear either school uniform or a
smart debating uniform.
Schools may bring along up to 20 audience members to watch their
debates (INCLUDING their reserve speakers and coaches).
At the end of each debate, the adjudicators will fill out score
sheets. They will then retire from the room to discuss the debate.
When they return, one of the judges will give a brief summary and
announce the winning team and the best speaker of the debate. Schools
will be sent copies of the adjudicators’ score sheets during the week
following the debate. Most debate rooms will have a panel of three
adjudicators. However, given the size of the championships, it may be
necessary for a few debates to be judged by a single, very experienced
adjudicator.
One debate in Division II has been postponed until Thursday 28th
February. (This is due to the members of the Singapore American
School's team being out of Singapore on 22nd February on an overseas
field trip as part of their school's curiculum.) All other round 1
debates wil be held on the evening of Friday 22nd February.
All participating teams will also debate in 2 further preliminary
rounds on 2nd March and 23rd March. After the preliminary rounds, the
teams with the best records in each division will then go on to the
knock-out rounds.
In each of the 3 divisions, we have an odd number of competing
schools. To ensure that every team has an opponent for their debates,
we have included a "swing" team in each division to make up the
numbers. The "swing" teams come from Raffles Institution (Division I),
Nan Chiau High School (Division II) and Anglican High School (Division
III). In the draw, the "swing" teams are listed as being these
schools' 'B' Teams. At each preliminary round, the "swing" team will
debate against a team from another school and will be judged as if
they were a regular team in the competition (and will win or lose each
of their debates depending on how well the perform). However no matter
how well the "swing" team may perform, they will not be eligible to
qualify for the knock-out rounds.
If you have any questions or queries, please feel free to contact me.
I look forward to seeing you and your students at preliminary round 1
on 22nd February. I wish your school the very best of luck in the
competition. I hope it will provide your students with a fantastic
learning opportunity.
Regards,
Mark Gabriel
