Dear Teachers of English Language ,
ACCIDENTLY OR ACCIDENTALLY ?
How would you deal with the above spellings , when you are correcting
notebooks ?
1) Some Dictionaries accept both spellings.
For instance , Merriam Webster takes the position that "ACCIDENTLY" is an
alternate spelling of "ACCIDENTALLY".
However , we must keep in mind the reality that many Dictionaries accept
words which are in popular usage , whether they are correct or not.
Just because some dictionaries list a word , we need not automatically
assume that it is a correct word or a correct usage.
2)Many Teachers take the position that ACCIDENTALLY is the correct
spelling because it is derived from ACCIDENTAL , which is an adverb.
Some other teachers take the position that ACCIDENTLY is correctly derived
from the word ACCIDENT , an adjective.
3) ACCIDENTLY is a bit more commonly used in USA whereas ACCIDENTALLY is
routinely used in Britain.
On the whole , it is much more appropriate for us to stick to British
Practice.
By the way , Oxford Dictionary claims that ACCIDENTLY is becoming
obsolete.
4) I personally feel that we must avoid endorsing variants .
ALL teachers responsible for correcting examination papers will 100 %
accept ACCIDENTALLY.
But , quite a few teachers will not accept ACCIDENTLY and the student can
lose marks..
Therefore it is far more sensible to stick to ACCIDENTALLY rather than
ACCIDENTLY.
Why should a student suffer because we are not careful enough in our
corrections ?
cheerfully ,
anna
