*Launch of ITIHAAS Lucknow Chapter- with ASI*

*Report/press release*

After having pioneered Heritage Education in the National Capital Region,
ITIHAAS brings the concept to the city of Lucknow.

*ITIHAAS’ Lucknow Curtain Raiser with ASI, Lucknow Circle*

*14th August, 2014*

ITIHAAS launched two learning modules, ILMs, in Lucknow, woven around the
Residency and the Bada Imambada, in partnership with The Archaeological
Survey of India, Lucknow Circle.

The learning modules were conducted by the ITIHAAS team. The resource
persons from the ASI were there for interactive sessions.

Over 650 middle and senior school students from several schools in Lucknow
and Sitapur participated in the ILMs. Study material and other visual
material and activities were developed as part of the programme, relating
to the age-appropriate curricula. It was a full day programme where
students not only visited the monuments, but ˜engaged"with them.

*Mr. Amrit Abhijat,* Director General, Tourism and Culture department,
government of Uttar Pradesh interacted with the students in the Residency
and emphasised greatly on the need of such a programme in Lucknow.

*Mr. P K Misra*, Superintending Archaeologist, along with *Mr. Khan* and
his team interacted with the students in the Bada Imambada and expressed
the desire for an ongoing association with ITIHAAS who can mobilise
students and the teachers' community in promoting heritage education.

We thank the ASI for extending its support to the programme throughout and
being committed to a long association involving policy making and advocacy
for stronger linkages between school education and heritage.

*Some feedback:*

Teachers:

*We noticed that our students although well aware of the NCERT version of
the Revolt of 1857, had never been to the Residency, and for the first time
they experienced the connection between the history of the nation and their
own personal heritage.*

* I never thought students could learn so effectively outside the classroom
settings. It should be a compulsory programme for all students and
teachers. *

Students:

*We have come here for the first time. We enjoyed the stories with
ITIHAAS. And the activities were fun too.*

*My friend is a Shia Muslim. Now i understand her culture a lot better
than before. I am super glad to have come with ITIHAAS. *

*I never thought that every bagh and every Imambada in Lucknow has such
rich past. Thanks to ITIHAAS, i learnt a lot about my city more than from
any books.*

ITIHAAS has remained synonymous with *learning beyond classrooms* for 11
years now, and has reached out to 5 lakh students, and thousands of
teachers. Through its various programmes, ITIHAAS has created an ecosystem
for heritage education, and the vital connection between the child's world
and curriculum. To facilitate this, ITIHAAS works with National and
International organisations, like UNESCO, National Museum, ASI, Gandhi
Smriti and Darshan Samiti, Ministry of Culture to name a few.
