Mathematics is an expression of capability of a human mind to perform
multiple tasks at one go. In the initial stages, when the students are on
the stepping stones of this world of Mathematics, today's activity was an
initiative to expose them to the various branches of Mathematics in one go.
On the basis of their previous foundation of the topics- Subtraction,
Ascending/Descending Order, Odd and Even Numbers, the students did a
cumulative activity in the classroom in order to use all these concepts and
correlate at the same time.
The students were divided into five groups comprising maximum seven in
each. There were total thirty five cut outs of coloured papers of different
shapes (square, rectangle, circle and triangle). Each student had to
subtract the three-digit numbers mentioned on the coloured paper given to
them, individually. Post this calculation, the students had to check their
answers at the back of the paper. For example, if a student had got the
answer as 566 after subtracting 261 from 827, he or she would check the
answer by adding 566 to 261.
Then, each group was supposed to arrange the answers (that they had got
after subtracting the numbers) in ascending or descending order as per
their choice and stand accordingly.
When the students in a group had presented themselves in ascending or
descending order, then standing at his or her place, each child in a group
had to speak his or her number(the answer that he or she had got after
subtracting the three digit numbers) aloud and tell whether his or her
number was odd or even along with the reason.
After the presentation of each group, I told all the students who had 'odd
numbers' to sit in first and second row and 'even numbers' to sit in third
and fourth row.
The five groups were then, segregated into two groups-
GROUP1 : Odd Numbers
GROUP2 : Even Numbers
As fun is always a trigger to learning, hence I involved certain aspects of
creative art in the activity that engaged the students to let their
imagination flow and create drawings.
I gave a book-shaped pastel paper to each group. The students pasted their
coloured papers of different shapes on the two book-shaped pastel papers in
their respective groups. Then, the students drew different things using the
shapes that they had. For example, the ones who had square shape made a
hut, an alien; using rectangle, some of them drew a bus, a truck, a robot;
with circle, they made a flower, a sun; and, those who had a triangle shape
made a rocket, a building, etc.
As an addition to the fun, the learning for the students, through this art,
was also there. They came to realise that the shapes are the base of any
picture or drawing. While exploring different things using different
shapes, the students were using one of the most basic educational
processes- the observation of same and different. It provided them with a
basic process that they would be able to use in observing, comparing and
discussing all they would see and encounter.
Moreover, I displayed these two book-shaped pastel papers in the classroom
under the headings, 'My Book of Odd Numbers' and 'My Book of Even Numbers'.
The students were delighted to see their work displayed in their classroom.
It also gave them a sense of belongingness and encouraged them to look
forward to such more activities.
