Where: 31 New Chardon St, Boston, 02114
What: Partitioned Book Club
When: August 15th, 6:30pm
Run By: Skyler and Blake
We have a visiting organizer from New Orleans! Blake is one of the main organizers for the New Orleans Philosophers 11:11 meetup, and since he's in town we're doing a joint meetup and taking a detour to the philosophical for a distributed book club.
Our book of choice is Methods of Ethics, by Henry Sidgewick. It's the first detailed development of Utilitarianism (though he covers other philosophies as well) and Sidgewick's writing was a major influence on such later philosophers as Bertrand Russel and Peter Singer. The goal of the book was a detailed description and exposition of "commonsense" morality.
Here's the plan: Each of us can pick one of the chapters of Methods of Ethics Volume I from
this list, put our names next to it, read it before the meetup, and then at the meetup we'll take turns summarizing the chapter to the crowd in three minutes. There's two places to put your name down on the google sheet: try and pick one nobody else is reading. If there's two people ready for a particular chapter, they can decide who feels more comfortable presenting it (or just flip a coin!) Once we've gone through all the chapters we'll switch to an open social; you can discuss the book, recent ACX articles, or whatever else is on your mind.
We'll have a sign saying "ACX Meetup" on the door to help you find the right place!
