SS3 Release Notes

3.30.24.2

March 2026

Greetings SS3 users.

Our sharp-eyed users have found a couple more situations that needed to be fixed and are listed below and in the change log.

.

fix timevary_SRparm for styr-1 start  This issue was probably introduced with the major revision to the spawner-recruitment code in version 3.30.24.  This bug only occurs if a spawner-recruitment parameter was set to be time-varying beginning in year start_year - 1.

[Bug]: incorrect equil SSB when using SRR fxn = 7  This bug in the equilibrium calculations for the low fecundity, survivorship based spawner-recruitment relationship has probably been in place for many years, perhaps since the creation of this code.  The time series calculations were OK, but MSY and any outputs dependent on the equilibrium biomass resulting from a %SPR value were incorrect.  The replacement code has been thoroughly tested and we urge all users of this relationship to check for impact on your results.

terminology tune-up  Here is notice of our continual efforts to clean up terminology used internal to the code and in the input and output files.  Rick’s mind doesn’t demand consistency, and his code sometimes shows that.

The new code and executables are available on GitHub.  The new issues are listed below

We still are working on an interaction between seasonal settings and growth.  It seems that all the testing of the various growth options were done using annual time step models, and all the testing of seasonality options were tested using von Bertanlaffy growth. We are doing a very thorough comprehensive testing of all growth x seasonality settings, and while using time-varying growth.  Hopefully we’ll have this ready to release in May,

Rick and the SS3 Team
