Hi all,

I am running into an error when I try to apply the super year approach to some length composition data. The error I am getting is: "Warning 1 Fatal Error! Error: unequal number of length superperiod starts and stops".

I have attached my data file to this email. I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Best,

Laura

Hi Laura,
your data file appears to be correctly formatted with regard to super-periods.
It is possible that a missing or excess value earlier in the datafile is causing SS3 to misinterpret the length comp input because everything is read sequentially.

Could you send the echoinput.sso file so I can see if something else is incorrect?  Or send all the input files so I can run it myself.

Hi Laura,
I dug into the source code (at https://github.com/nmfs-ost/ss3-source-code/blob/main/SS_readdata_330.tpl#L1818-L1827) which showed me that the tally for length compositions entries with negative month indicating the start and end of super-periods was occurring after first filtering for entries with year within the range of years in the model. This helped me figure out that the first entry is associated with 1992 but the start year of the model is 1993. If I change the start year to 1992, then it runs.

Thanks so much for figuring this out! I'm glad it was something simple.

Best,

Laura
