SR(A)WN 2015 — 1

This is the Student Robotics (Almost) Weekly Newsletter, a (roughly) fortnightly newsletter which will summarise the goings-on across SR. This is a bit of an experiment, so if you have feedback or think we've missed something, feel free to reply to this thread.

  • The competition happened! Much discussion has been happening on the list around what went well, and what didn't. Badger (our server) had problems during the competition; this is also being discussed.

  • Team photos were taken and are now up on Flickr.

  • Olly Smith has been working on a competition video, and has a preview on YouTube. #2470

  • There was a major overspend on the production costs for the arena, which started a conversation on how we work out our budget estimates. #2460

  • The vault, our storage area in Southampton, was tidied and the inventory updated accordingly, including team kit boxes. #2425 #2424. The future of the vault is uncertain – it is highly likely that it will be taken off us, because the University are low on space. What will replace it is unclear.

  • Game ideas for 2015 are now being discussed. Blueshirts are invited to join the discussion on the srobo-game mailing list. Ollie suggested an animation of the next game, so if this is to occur, the rules should be finalised sooner than usual.

  • It's been suggested that we collect some statistics on how many teams used custom firmware on their Ruggeduino. This needs someone to take it up. #2462

  • Giorgos has been looking at developing robot bases for KickStart. These will be given out to teams to help them get started. #2461

  • Discussion has started on how to improve support for teams and newbie blueshirts for next year.

  • Preparation has begun for Smallpeice 2014. Smallpeice is a five-day summer school which some Blueshirts run in conjunction with the University of Southampton and the Smallpeice Trust. If you want to get involved (you don't need to be from Southampton), check out the summer school mailing list.

  • The Munich branch is finalizing their 'Satzung', a document needed when starting a 'Verein' — basically if everything goes well, they will be starting something similar to a charity.

Thanks to Harry Cutts, lilafisch, Giorgios Karatziolas and Murray Colpman for contributing.

Hi,

This is pretty good. Thanks for producing it.

A couple of things of note:* it might be worth copying all the links
to footnotes, even if they're also in the text, so that plain-text
readers can still get to them.
* You might also want to double-check some of the trac ones, since a
couple of them are missing the "/tickets" phrase.

Thanks,
Peter

This is a really nice summary, especially bringing together all the different google groups since I don't usually look at the development one.  Thanks for putting it all together.

I'm really hoping to get done by the end of this weekend, but then again, i was hoping to get it done within a week of the competition. A whole bunch of reasons have kept pushing it back, but  these can all be fixed for future videos.

*Ollie . And much sooner than this year, as mentioned in the thread, I'd ideally want three empty non school weeks, so that i'm not working 9-5 every day, I can enjoy it, and have time to plan/test/troubleshoot/improve & perfect the video.

Thanks to Harry Cutts, lilafisch, Giorgios Karatziolas and Murray Colpman for contributing.
