Given the release of the latest SR(A)WN, I thought it might be prudent to give a few words about Slack.

In Southampton we have moved all of our messaging to a Slack server. You can see what Slack is about here: https://slack.com/is

Although we created it in Southampton, anyone is free to join, and we would be happy to have other people.
If you have an @studentrobotics.org email address you can just create an account. If not, contact me here, or off-list with your email address, and I'll add you to the team.

Not sure what happened here previously, may have accidentally deleted the previous version of this post.

It would be nice to use something like Slackin to let people invite themselves.

What do you think?

Sounds like a good idea in principle. I had never heard of that, or even thought about it.
That would allow anyone to access the Slack server, even competitors, who we might want to keep out of discussions. What about creating a policy for @studentrobotics.org email addresses, and getting them to people? Then we could guarantee that only people who get in are people who should be allowed in.

AIUI we have a limited number of those (has that changed?), so they were handed out as and when they were needed.

*mumble mumble* much prefer IRC *mumble mumble*

I don't see the harm in allowing competitors, or others, to access
Slack. Discussions which we want to keep private (e.g. discussing the
game) can be had in private channels.

Does someone want to set this up?

Reminder that if we allow competitors in we have to have logging of all messages for child safety purposes.

Had a quick look around. The free version of Slack keeps the last 10000 messages, but I think that gets used up quite quickly. I imagine we are not going to pay for Slack, but that would give us unlimited archives.
I could probably write a bot that would keep logs, and save them somewhere, but I don't know how official the logging process has to be. Also what is the liability like if I write something which I tell you logs everything, but it doesn't work?

Does someone want to set this up?

I can set this up if it's wanted.

You also need to consider what happens with private messages, which your bot can't log.

As a matter of fact, private messages are of much greater concern than public ones

Is there a written child protection policy now then?

There appears to be no way to log private messages, as yet [0].

So it seems to me that Slackin probably shouldn't be implemented yet.
