Hi Everyone,

This is a general-everything-order for Smallpeice, please shout if you can provide any of the things listed below without us paying for them, otherwise I'll be planning on making these orders in the next few days.

If we go for the old kits (which its looking extremely likely that we will), we'll need to order the following things (in addition to what Giorgos listed in the email RE'd from):

- 13 Usb hubs, 00039873, £4.88 = £63.44
- 13 Green battery power connectors 1793033  £1.28 = £19.20
- 110 (9 for each team + spares) Green power connectors for between boards 3882275 £0.86 = £86

which totals £168.64.

As for things which aren't just robot kits:
It would be good to get some feedback (mainly from Dave) about whether we can borrow any of these things from elsewhere, otherwise I'll be ordering them.
Items for handling scaffolding:
- 4 scaffolding handling gloves 1499172, £2.77 = £11.08
- 2 hammers for scaffolding 1328711, £3.66 = £7.32
- 5 safety goggles, HE33056 £1.06 = £5.30
- 5 ear defenders HE33087, £3.19 = £15.95
- 5 dust masks HE33087, £3.19 = £15.95

Things for the arena:
- Socket Wrench (like £10)
- Vacuum cleaner (borrowed)
- 2 powder Fire Extinguishers, CP06267, £16.25 = £32.50
- Bucket of sand/salty water for putting dangerous batteries into (like £5)
- Black cloth (for surrounding scaffolding), from fabricland
- 1 Scissors (for cutting cloth), TL17048 £2 = £2
Gaffa tape from a third party site [1]:
- 3 Yellow Gaffer tape rolls £8.64 = £25.92
- 3 Orange Gaffer tape rolls £8.64 = £25.92
- 1 Green Gaffer tape roll £8.64 = £8.64
- 1 Pink Gaffer tape roll £8.64 = £8.64
- 5 Raspberry Pi's (for screens) 2525225 £25.82 = £129.10
- 5 microSD cards (for Pis) MD00382 £3.72 = £18.6
- 6 HDMI cables 801-1196 (1 spare just in case) £1.60 = £9.60

Things for assembling robots:
 - (RS), 15 allen keys, 735-150, £0.32 = £4.80
(RS) 5 circlip pliers, 337-1462, £11.12 = £55.60
- 6 extra wheel hub connectors http://www.robotshop.com/uk/hex-hub-s40-6mm-2wide.html £3.52 = £21.12:
- 2 Hacksaws 2103261 £5.33 ea. = £10.66
- 13 Screwdrivers (phillips head), like £2 = £26
- 13 Sidecutters 2543008 £1.90 = £24.70
- 13 Pliers TL10342 £2.87 = £37.31
- 1mx1m mdf? for robot bases
- 2 rolls of Velcro Hook 890-4155 £2.33 = £4.66
- 2 rolls of Velcro Loop 890-4168 £2.33 = £4.66

Other:
- Prizes. Maybe get something pretty designed on a PCB and hand 5 out as prizes? No clue for the price in that case. Can someone inform me about this? failing that we can laser cut some clear plastic

Overall this adds up to £487 + £170 = £660ish , which excludes timber, fabric, scaffolding, (possible networking gear hire? Do we need this?), anything needed for the electronics workshops, and anything else I've forgotten about (shout out please!)

Again, we need people to go through this with a finely toothed comb very soon before I order it all in the next few days.

Thanks,
Andy B-S

[1]  http://www.gaffatape.com/Fluorescent-Gaffer-Cloth-Tape/default.aspxLooks like a dodgy supplier but SR have ordered from them many times before, and after looking around I couldn't find anyone cheaper. Onecall is £5 more expensive per roll so we can use them at a pinch.

We'll need to order the following for use with the v3 kit:
- 20 batteries                     (£10.30*20 = £206)
10 battery chargers           (£17*10 + £10*10 = £270)
- 10 12V 60W power bricks  (£10*10 = £100 = £225)

-15 Logitech C270 Webcams (15*£14.99 = £225)

Total = £801 (ideally £1000 to cover odd parts to make the old kit salvageable)

The above purchases will need to be made via a credit card as none of the suppliers (Amazon, Hobby King, Curry's) are in the agresso system.

Hi all,

Tyler and I spent some time yesterday trying to revive the old kit, and it went really well! We managed to generate some code to flick some IO pins and print hello world very easily, so it looks very likely that we can go ahead with using v3!

I would say its a good idea to continue development of the homebrew kit at a more relaxed pace for now. I still need to do a bit of testing of aspects of the old kit (with custom token definitions, the vision system, and moving servos) so I don't want to completely commit until tomorrow morning.

Until then we should go ahead and order things which we would need no matter what happens, namely chargers and batteries. I believe Giorgos is in charge of ordering these things. (Shout if you aren't)

Meanwhile, We need to pick up the pace in general with organising things, we've only got 3 weeks!

Thanks,

Hi,

I know I'm not doing smallpeice this year but thought I'd inject a few thoughts:

1) Drop the screens - ok they look fancy, but until only 3 years ago even SR didn't have working screens and the competition still worked just fine. That instantly saves you ~£150, also I notice you didn't include costs for the screens themselves or the scaffold mounts, so the total saving would be much greater. Also, wiring everything up and checking it works correctly would double your arena setup time (every minute you are setting up the arena is a minute not spent mentoring).

2) Scaffolding stuff:
Safety goggles etc. - ECS labs will have plenty of those, ask to borrow.
Gloves - not necessary, really doesn't make much difference when you're hammering the poles together, only stops you getting your hands dirty when carrying them
Dust masks - I don't ever recall using/needing these in the past. If absolutely necessary; try to borrow.
Ear defenders - get the cheap in-ear plugs, they do the job and are infinitely cheaper (a quick google suggests you can get 20 people's worth for £2.50)
Hammers - see (3)

3) hammers, allen keys, circlip pliers, pliers, screwdrivers, side cutters, and hacksaws - we have bought plenty of these for past smallpeice events, check for existing availability and after the event keep track of where they end up. (I can see an argument for new blades for the hacksaws, but that should be much cheaper) I reckon it's ~£160 saving if stuff gets reused here

4) I will be shocked if the uni don't have suitable fire extinguishers they can lend you, they want the venue to burn down even less than you do

By my reckoning that's ~£400 saving just from borrowing, reusing, and cutting unnecessary gimmicks.

Hi all,

The components for the electronics lab are unlikely to change any time soon (unless anyone can think of any major modifications to the tasks, or can think up a new one). A summary of it in its current state is:

32 breadboards: £77.12
10 reels of solid-core hookup wire: £44.19
32 ultrasonic sensor modules: £65.92
Misc components (resistors, LEDs, microswitches etc): £34.88

Full details are at [1].

Almost all of these parts are all sourced from Farnell so they can be included with your mega-order (although I'v e been browsing uk.farnell.com instead of onecall.farnell.com, the part numbers seem to be the same). The only thing that's not Farnellable is the ultrasonic modules, since a somewhat rare 3.3V-compatible version of them is required (the vast majority of these modules require a 5V supply, but AFAIK the V3 kit only provides 3.3V). They're listed on a site called "dealextreme" [2], and are estimated to take 7-11 business days to be dispatched and shipped, so we should order them fairly soon.

If anything changes, it'll likely just be resistors etc. which are pennies.

Tools (pliers, wire cutters, wire strippers) aren't included in this but I'm hoping that we can borrow them from ECS. Unless anyone knows if we have 30 of each of these in a RUB somewhere, I'll drop someone (probably David) an email about this in the next couple of days. Likewise, I'll enquire as to whether ECS are willing to donate hookup wire and/or loan breadboards. If any of these requests do happen, then this should reduce the cost significantly.

The last thing that comes to mind is whether we have enough servos; if we don't have 30, then we should either buy more or stagger the tasks in the lab so they're not all used at once (though students will probably want to use quite a few in their robots anyway).

Please let me know if anything I've mentioned is unclear, or if you have any suggestions.

Thanks,
Kier

Hi all!
Tyler and I moved all of the payments to a spreadsheet today to keep track of what needs to be bought, see:
Also there have been some major rethinks (ie we've increased the amount of tape needed, the number of wheel hubs because they're not produced anymore, and removed fire extinguishers price because SUSU will have them, added in Giorgos' battery order prices, added elec kit prices, etc...)

Please look through them and add any comments for things which we may need to buy or may not actually need to buy after all (for example, saws and gloves might be ECS provided, would be nice to know if you have them!)

I'll give editor access to those who can buy things to keep it up to date

Thanks,

Good idea, will ask

Gloves - not necessary, really doesn't make much difference when you're hammering the poles together, only stops you getting your hands dirty when carrying them

I only mention this because I hurt my fingers when handling scaff last year, gloves would have helped (admittedly, not by much)

Yeah, you're right here. The logic was that the scaff comes with lots of dried mud attached usually, and the cube isn't too well ventilated. I've removed it from the updated order though.

Ear defenders - get the cheap in-ear plugs, they do the job and are infinitely cheaper (a quick google suggests you can get 20 people's worth for £2.50)

Hi David,

Thanks for your response - having breadboards, wire and passives already available for use is great.

The components that can be bought from Onecall are:

15 x infrared emitter, order code 2290441
15 x infrared phototransistor, order code 2290444
15 x microswitch, order code SW03193

Alternatively I can get these added to Andy's spreadsheet [1] and they can go in along with the rest of the parts being ordered from Onecall.

I've looked for a compatible ultrasonic module at the four suppliers you mentioned as well as a few others, with no luck, so it looks like dealextreme might be our only option for getting these.
An alternative solution may be to find some way to get a 5V supply available in the SR robot kit, because then we could use
any ultrasonic module (for example, SN36696 on Onecall) rather than this somewhat obscure 3.3V-compatible one, but I can't
think of an easy and practical way to do this off the top of my head.

The only other things remaining for the electronics lab are tools: pliers, side cutters and wire strippers. If we don't already have
enough of these in stock, then we'll need to buy some of them. The spreadsheet lists them, so they're already set to be purchased, but if ECS can provide these then there's no need to do so.
We would probably need at least 15 (one between two); 30 would be nice (one per student).

Thanks,
Kier

Is there any UK based suppliers that have a suitable microswitch (onecall, rs, rapid digikey), I would much rather get these from a UK based supplier and I can also use another source of funding I have at my disposal. If not then deal extreme is the way to go and Giorgos can order these.

- 20 batteries                     (£10.30*20 = £206)
- 10 battery chargers           (£17*10 + £10*10 = £270)
- 10 12V 60W power bricks  (£10*10 = £100 = £225)

-15 Logitech C270 Webcams (15*£14.99 = £225)

Total = £801 (ideally £1000 to cover odd parts to make the old kit salvageable)

The above purchases will need to be made via a credit card as none of the suppliers (Amazon, Hobby King, Curry's) are in the agresso system.

Cheers,

Giorgos

Dear all,
OK we have a plan, Giorgos, what now is the proposed spend? Let me know and then we can supply the sub project code. Could you also breakdown what can be ordered by purchase order and what needs my credit card.

Thanks,
David

Thanks,
Andy B-S

Hi Kier,

Could I recommend that we buy somewhere closer to 50 of each of the components. The students usually want more than one set per robot, and they have a habit of burning through them when trying to figure out how they work!

Regards,

Giorgos

We already have some components from last years labs, might be worth cheking these to see if we already have the parts we need as we did Light gates and microswitches last year as well.

Thanks for mentioning this, I've asked Andy to have a look in the broomcupboard for these. Off the top of my head I'm not sure where they might be (the toolboxes on the top shelf maybe?).

Hi Kier,

We don’t currently have the quantities of hand tools (pliers, side cutters and wire strippers) that you require so I advise that you purchase these items.

Thanks for letting us know.

This is a good shout. My original quantity of 15 is wrong anyway as I forgot that while students may be doing different tasks in parallel, they won't be disassembling the circuits afterwards (instead they'll build them on stripboard so they can be used in the robots). A baseline should be 30 (one each for the lab / three per robot), with a large margin for lost/broken components or wanting to use more than three on a robot. 50 sounds like a good number. Apologies for any confusion caused by this.

Thanks,
Kier
