Using Stepper Motors with the SR Kit

Hi,

In the forums HSO are asking whether it's possible to use stepper
motors with the SR kit [1]. I vaguely recall someone mentioning that
this might be possible with the current motor boards back when they
were new, though it's also possible I imagined this.

Is this possible? Either way it would be great if an expert could
someone post an explanation in the forums.
