Proposed Westside School District - information

Senator Sanchez's office has scheduled a meeting with the NM Secretary of Education, Veronica Garcia to be held Thursday, May 27th. This meeting is for parents and community members to have the opportunity to express to her our support for the new school district, prior to her making this important decision. She has stated that she will be making this decision by the end of this month. The meeting will be held at the CNM Workforce Training Center, located on Eagle Rock NE. Directions: I-40 to I-25 North; exit on Alamenda, make a left, right on San Mateo, and a left on Eagle Rock. The following is some information about the proposed new Westside School District. Boundaries: The Rio Grande on the east, Central Ave. on the south, the Native American land boundary on the west, and the Rio Rancho School District on the north. Tax Base (Source: Bernalillo County Assessor): 2.9 Billion, which is basically 1/4 of APS's tax base. The match for capital improvements is basically the same percentage as APS receives from the State which averages about 48%. Keep in mind that the tax base pays for buildings, and repairs, not for operational expenses. The operational funds come from the educational funding formula.  The APS district receives over $7,000 per child, and additional funds for ESL and special education services.  APS is one of the largest school district's in the U.S.  Most other cities of the size of Albuquerque, El Paso for example, have 8 school districts. A rally will be held at Ladera Golf Course from 2 to 3 PM this Sunday, May 23 in support of the proposed new Westside School District. Please bring your family.
