The West Side is going to the dogs.
The city recently officially opened the
Ouray Dog Park, its largest dog park, which sits off Ouray near the intersection of Ladera. The 2-acre park gives dog owners a place to take their pets and let them run around without a leash. The park is surrounded by an evergreen-color, chain-link fence, and wood chips cover the ground. Benches are spaced throughout the park, giving residents a place to sit and watch their pets.
Chris Ramirez, the city's spokesman, said this is the largest dog park the city has opened. It cost $300,000, of which $260,000 came from the discretionary funds of City Councilor Ken Sanchez. Ramirez said the remaining funds were from a 2006 bond. "One thing we realized is there is so much development on the West Side, and this park was needed," he said. "We want to have more recreational options for residents."
It should be noted that Councilor Ken Sanchez and his policy analyst Elaine Romero and staff, had a major role in getting this project completed, and residents of SRMNA owe them a debt of gratitude. Thanks Ken!
