Dear Bhagavathas,
In our SrivaishNava SampradAya, three attributes( TirukkalyANna GuNas) of Emperuman Sriman NArAyaNa are said to excel His other innumerable attributes. They are His Paratva ( Supreme Nature), Saulabhya( easy accessabilty) and Sauseelya( easy affability-quality of freely mingling with His devotees unmindful of their caste, creed or status). These three supreme qualities are manifested in Sri KrishNAvatAra. His Paratva was evident at the time of His birth itself. He was born to Sri DEvaki and Sri VasudEva, exhibiting His Divine form with Chaturbhuja(four hands), Shankha, Chakra , other DivyAyudhas and all divyAbharanas. Sri Sukhabrahmam was wonder stuck, extolled this manifestation as “ tamadbhutam bAlakam ambhujEkshanam”. Again this attribute of Paratva was seen in His slaying of the asuras such as PUtana, SakatAsura, VatsAsura, TruNAvritta, Bhakha- the list is endless. He tamed the giant serpent KALinga by dancing on its hoods. He protected the cowherds from the fury of torrential rains unleashed by Indra, by lifting the Govardhana Giri, held it as an umbrella with His little finger for seven days. ( kalleduthu kalmAri kAthAy ennum-TirunedunthAndagam-Tirumangai mannan) The manner in which He was held by YasOda for stealing butter showed His Saulabhya. The Parabrahmam, that He is, who swallowed this universe, sustained it in His Stomach, was floating in the water of praLaya by lying on a banyan leaf ( vaTha patra sAyee) and later spat out for creation, was held captive by YasOda for stealing butter, showed His quality of Saulabhaya. YasOda tried to tie Him to a old mortar with the help of a rope for His mischief, but not successful. Every time she tried to tie, the rope always fell short of a few inches and she fell on the floor exhausted. Seeing her plight, the Lord out of His boundless love, allowed Himself to be finally tied to the mortar, there by leaving a deep scar on His belly. This act earned Him the name “DAmOdara”.( KaNNinun cirutthAmbinAl kaTTtuNNa paNNiya peru mAyan). DAma+udara means tied to the stomach. He is proud to exhibit this scar as a mark of saulabhya to His devotees and how He is bound by their love. Just like the devotees of Him wear the Shanka and Chakra on their shoulders as a mark of their servitude (seshatva), Lord DAmOdara too proudly wears this scar on His udara, to show His DAsatva ( servitude) to the devotees. His acts of joining with His friends, shoulder to shoulder, to graze the cattle in the forest, eating food along with them and get caught red handed by the Gopis while stealing the butter, exhibit His Sauseelya. All these qualities are discernible only in the case of Lord as DAmOdara. Lord Sri Krishna in DvApara yuga as DAmOdara decided to descend from His nitya vibhUti-Sri VaikunTha, had chosen in this kali yuga to dwell in a temple along with His inseparable consort Sri TirumAlazhagi at DAmal, a village which is nestling on the Chennai-Banglore Highway, about 12 kms west of KAnchIpuram and about 3 kms from the divya desa Tirupputkuli. There is an ancient temple located in the midst of the village dedicated to Sri TirumAlazhagi and Sri DAmOdara PerumAl. The ThAyAr name is quite unique and rarely heard of. Her benign bewitching smile with full of compassion is to be seen than to be described. This beautiful temple was successfully last renovated in 1995, after a gap of 34 years, by our Sabha.. The Agama Sastras prescribe Ashtabandana and MahAsamprokshanam are to be performed once in 12 years.By the Divine Will of Sri DAmOdara, our Sabha is once again priveleged to undertake this kainkarya. There are some repairs to the temple to be carried out before the Samprokshanam and for this the BAlAlayam was consecrated on the 14th of June, 2009, The MahAsamprokshanam is scheduled to be held on the 3rd of September, 2009, with pUrvAnga yAga sAla homas to commence on the 1st of September, 2009.
