"Utpaladeva was considered a siddha, a "perfected being, "one of
the masters of the tantric tradition in Kashmir, and he is best known for his
philosophical treatises. The Shivastotravali reflects Utpaladeva’s philosophy,
known as the Pratyabhijna school. And yet it is unique among the author’s work
in its not being a straightforward philosophical treatise but instead, as Dr.
Bailly points out in her introduction, more of a spiritual diary of one who is
actually treading the path of Shiva. The path that Utpaladeva has chosen does
not require leaving one’s home and heading for mountain cave; instead it calls
for changing one’s view of the world, for leading a life of divine recognition
while carrying on with ordinary life.
"In clearly written, lucid prose,
Dr. Bailly illuminates the many faces of Utpaladeva’s quest. At the core of his
spiritual journey is the enigmatic relationship between devotion and grace: how
much does spiritual attainment depend upon the individual’s efforts, and how
much is a divine gift? And how are these to be realized while living in the
midst of society, maintaining worldly obligations and lifestyle?
"For
over a thousand years the Shaiva community of Kashmir has used in its worship
the hymns of Utpaladeva’s Shivastotravali. Here for the first time these hymns
are presented in translation as English verse along with the Sanskrit, a clear
and lively introduction, two appendices on special aspects of Kashmir Shaivism,
and additional notes."
The Triadic Heart of Siva : Kaula
Tantricism of Abhinavagupta in the Non-Dual Shaivism of Kashmir/Paul Eduardo
Muller-Ortega. Reprint. 1997,
Delhi. Sri Satguru xii, 330 p.,
Contents: 1. Introduction and
methodological considerations. 2. The historical context. 3. The symbol of the
heart in India Prior to Abhinavagupta. 4. The heart as ultimate reality. 5. The
heart as embodied cosmos: Kula. 6. The heart : vibration and emissional power.
7. The heart and natural metaphors. 8. The heart as Mantra 9. Conclusion : the
heart attained. Appendix. Notes. Bibliography. Index.
"This book
explores one of the most explicit and sophisticated theoretical formulations of
tantric yoga. It explains Abhinavagupta's teaching about the nature of ultimate
reality, about the methods for experiencing this ultimate reality, and about the
nature of the state of realization, a condition of embodied enlightenment. The
author uncovers the conceptual matrix surrounding the practices of the Kaula
lineage of Kashmir Shaivism.
"The primary textual basis for the book is
provided by Abhinavagupta's Paratrisika-laghuvrtti, a short meditation manual
that centers on the symbolism of the Heart-mantra, SAUH.
"Muller-Ortega's
approach is good, clear, intelligent, and perceptive. The translation of the
Paratrisika-laghuvrtti given in the appendix, being the first English
translation of this short but important text, is a very useful contribution to
the study of Kashmir Shaivism, and so are the long and numerous quotations in
the text of other works, as yet untranslated into English, of Abhinavagupta".--

Mahayanasutralamkara by Asanga. Sanskrit text and translated into
English by Surekha Vijay Limaye. Reprint. Delhi, Satguru, 2000,
xxiv, 554 p., $41. ISBN 81-7030-346-8.
"Asanga is one of the most
important philosophical personalities in the history of Buddhism. His
contribution to Vijnanavada School of thought is unparalleled. The Vijnanavada
school of Asanga is also known as Yogacara. For Asanga and others, the Absolute
truth, i.e. pure consciousness (Vijnana( can only be realised by practice of
yoga. That indicated the practical side of this school, while the word
"Vijnanavada" brings out its speculative features. In its practical application
it is described as Yogacara, i.e. following the path of Yoga.
"The
Mahayanasutralamkara by Asanga is a landmark in the development of Vijnanavada
absolutism. This is a gigantic work on Mahayana Buddhism. The title itself
indicates its manifold features of Mahayana. Putting it in Asanga's own words,
its an embelishment of Mahayana sutras. There is no Buddhist topic which is not
touched by Asanga. Various topics of Buddhism are discussed on the lines of
Mahayana in twentyone chapters called Adhikasas with commentary.
"The
present book contains English translation of the Sanskrit text and commentary of
the Mahayanasutralamkara. The book contains notes and an index of the terms. The
book is published under Biblio theca-Indo Buddhica Series."

"Since us appearance in China in the third
century, The Lotus Sutra has been regarded as one of the most illustrious
scriptures in the Mahayana Buddhist canon. The object of intense veneration
among generations of Buddhists in China, Korea, Japan and other parts of the
world, it has had a profound impact on the great works of Japanese and Chinese
literature, attracting more commentary than any other Buddhist
scripture.
"As Watson notes in the introduction to his remarkable
translation, The Lotus Sutra is not so much an integral work as a collection of
religious texts, an anthology of sermons, stories, and devotional manuals, some
speaking with particular force to persons of one type or in one set of
circumstances, some to those of another type or in other circumstances. This is
no doubt one reason why it has had such broad and lasting appeal over the ages
and has permeated so deeply into the cultures that have been exposed to it."

Self Realization in Kashmir Shaivism : The Oral Teachings of Swami
Lakshmanjoo/John Hughes. Reprint. Delhi, Sri Satguru, 1997, xxxiv, 139
p., Plates, ISBN 81-7030-546-2.
Contents: Foreword/Lance Nelson.
Introduction. 1. Fifteen verses of wisdom. 2. Talks on practice. 3. Entrance
into the Supreme reality. 4. Talks on discipline. 5. The secret knowledge of
Kundalini. Appendices. Index.
"This book presents the oral teachings of
the twentieth century’s great Kashmir Shaivite master. The last of his long
lineage, Swami Lakshmanjoo preserved, as did his predecessors, the oral
knowledge that illuminates this ancient philosophy—that clarifies the often
deliberately obscure tantric texts.
"Swami Lakshmanjoo reveals the
essence of the way and the means to self realization. Here in his own original
discourses, as well as in his English renderings of Abhinavagupta and
Kshemaraja, he unveils the essential teachings of this yoga
philosophy.
"Swami Lakshmanjoo reveals the tantric understanding of the
purpose and reason for creation. He offers instruction on the greatness and
importance of the supreme mantra sauh. In his presentation of effective
practice, he explains why meditation is both effortless and, at the same time,
difficult. In his discussion of discipline he clarifies why personal habits and
dispositions play an important part in spiritual growth. Finally, in his
unveiling of the path of Kundalini yoga, he is intent on exposing and thereby
preserving this hidden elevated process while warning of its pitfalls."
Sarada-Tilaka Tantram/English Translated by A Board of
Scholars. Reprint. Delhi, Satguru, 2002, x, 284 p., $17. ISBN
81-7030-175-0.
"The work by Laksmanadesika comprises twenty-five
chapters. The commentator Ragahvabhatta states that of the 25 chapters of the
Sarada-tilaka, chapters 1-24 correspond to the 24 tattvas of Samkhya Philosophy
and the last one devoted to Yoga, show that Purusa of Samkhya is beyond Prakriti
and Vikriti. The first chapter is Prakriti as it discusses creation. Chapters
ii-xxiv deals with Prakriti-Vikriti. In this work, Siva is represented both as
Saguna and Niguna according to how he is identified with Prakriti or
differentiated from it. From Prakriti or Sakti arises Nada which gives rise to
Bindu. The interesting features of this work are practices for subjugation of
women, destruction of enemies and Tantras for malevolent purposes. Diksa,
Purscarana and nyasa figures prominently in it chapters vii-xxii deals with the
Mantras of Saraswati, Lakshmi, Bhuvneswari, Durga, Tripura, Ganesha and
Candramas. This work contains list of works known and unknown. It draws
materials from Astronomical and mathematical works. Though generally sober, this
work lays down the six malevolent rites, and prescribes the propitiation of the
respective presiding deities. The drawing of Yantras for malefic purposes is
also prescribed. It should also be noted that unlike many other works of this
kind, it is free from the usual practices of the Vamamarga."

Men with a mission
to make meaningful books
Religious fervor fuels the two erudite and
gregarious brothers who pilot Sri Satguru Publications, the publishing arm of
Indian Books Centre. "God willed us into this business," Naresh and Sunil Gupta,
the proprietors and managers, concur conclusively. "We are religious, and this
is our destiny," adds Naresh. "Our wish is that our books will in some way
uplift, inspire or educate the reader. But at least we know that they are not
leading anyone astray." Sunil chimes in, "We fully expect that they will help
people to follow the right path."
True to their calling, their debut
book was the Shiv Samhita. Later, they released major works such as the 7-volume
anthology of Mimamsakosah, by Swami Kevalananda Saraswati, and the complete
Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophy. "As we are Hindus," explains Naresh, "we
publish about Ayurveda, Vastushastra and all the sacred sciences which are
allied to Hinduism."
While they look to their Lord for inspiration, they
rely on God-given management skills for success. "We are in business to publish
books for sale, not to fill shelves in our stores," asserts Sunil. "It is our
policy not to accept subsidies, so the title has to be absolutely saleable,"
Naresh elaborates. "In the beginning, we had to look for titles, but now that we
have our reputation, authors approach us. We consider the novelty, content and
language and ask ourselves, would this be suitable for the general reader or
academicians only? Thus different criteria are used for different subjects."
Being the newest publisher in Delhi, it is fitting that they have taken
the lead in the freshest market--internet sales. Their home page on the world
wide web--www.indianbookscentre.com-has greatly enhanced their export sales.
But, according to Naresh, the brothers have noticed that "In the last two to
three years the Indian market has grown substantially, and there is vast
potential. Earlier, we never concentrated on sales in India."
When asked
if their parents lived with them, Naresh, in a sudden break from his cool
corporate composure, quipped a terse "No." Then he sallied, "We live with them,
and there is a vast difference. They are the head of our family, which is one
unit. We do not worry about the future in heated competition with others. For we
wish to maintain a religious household. We believe that we each have our karmas
to live through and dharma to fulfill. Thus we are content."

"Srividya is discipline where abounds considerable
mystery, esotericism and occultism. There is among common people quite some
ignorance concerning its philosophy and practice. There is also a host of doubts
and uncertainties among practitioners themselves. The presence of different
tradition in Srividya is a further source of confusion. The textual background
to Srividya has almost become obscure and obsolete; it has become more a matter
of individual lineages of practices. In the circumstances there is a need for an
authentic and comprehensive account of all three aspects of Srividya, viz. The
Yantra, the Mantra and the Tantra. This book is an attempt to provide
one.

ABOUT THE BOOK
The Agama literature
includes the Silpa-Sastra, which is basic to iconography. Worship dealt with in
the Agama necessarily involves images which are worship-worthy. The rituals and
sequences that are elaborated in the Agama books find relevance only in the
context of an icon which is contained in a shrine. And icons are meaningful only
in the context of shrines and worship.
Agama texts are not easily
accessible to the people. A large number of them are still available only in
manuscripts; some of them which have been printed are only in their Sanskrit
originals. There is need, therefore, to present relevant excerpts from them at
least, to make the volumes on iconography more meaningful.
Further,
Indian temples are to be considered only in the general framework of temple
culture, which include not only religious and philosophical aspects but social,
aesthetic and economic aspects also.
The volumes named Agama
encyclopaedia deals with the temple culture and Agama framework, the sectarian
division of the agama into Saiva, Vaisnava and Sakta, and the topics selected
from the Agama, texts follow. Thus, the entirety of the Agama literature in so
far as it is relevant to the temple-culture is brought within the scope of the

Conclusion. Bibliography. Glossary. Index.
"The study and research
undertaken by Dr. Tomy Augustine on Yoga Tantra Theory and Praxis in the Light
of the Hevajra Tantra, a Metaphysical Perspective contained in this book makes a
unique statement about the development of tantric Buddhism in Indian culture and
philosophy.
The author's precise and meticulous analysis of the text of
the Hevajra Tantra applying the Madhyamika and Yogacara metaphysics and the
simultaneous attempt to highlight therein the synthesis of Tantric bipolarities
delves into rediscovering the vibrant emergence of the Vajrayana Buddhism. Dr.
Augustine's claim that "Vajrayana has contributed to the advancement of human
thought in regard to the development of new vision of God, world and (wo)man in
general and to Buddhist thought and praxis in particular" is fully substantiated
in this work.
This book will attract scholars in the fields of religion,
psychology and culture besides proving valuable to students of philosophy and
those who see the increasing interface between philosophy and the social
science."

"Among the medieval
works on Tantra, this work in Sanskrit holds a place of great importance for its
comprehension and authority. The author, who describes himself as an anchorite
who did austerity in Varanasi, prepared this book in twenty-five ‘Tarangas’ more
as a compilation of relevant material for the sadhakas than as an independent
work. It is encyclopaedic in nature; it is verily an ocean (as the title
suggests) of mantras. Now in Tantrik sadhana, the mantras are of great
significance, for they are sufficient means of visualizing the Gods. Indeed the
mantras are the "body" of the Gods. There is thus a correspondence between the
mantra (formulation), murti (visualization), and the Tantra (actualization).
This correspondence is the theme of this work. Exceedingly valuable for the
spiritual practitioners and extremely popular among them in the North as well as
in the South, there was till now no translation of this work into English. Great
was its need. Sri Satguru publication of Delhi have therefore to be
congratulated for making this monumental work available to the English-knowing
folk. All the 3,300 verses of this work (completed in 1589 A.D) have been
literally rendered into easy English with the help of the author’s own
commentary called Nauka. The board of Scholars who have completed this arduous
undertaking have done a fine job, and richly deserve our praise. They have
filled a lacuna that was keenly felt.
"There is also an excellent
introduction to the art and science of Tantra, as also an analysis of contents.
There are, at the end of the work, illustrations of yantras, which are
reproduction of the same drawings as were in the lithography copy of the book.
It is a very useful publication, and will be a addition to the Tantra
literature."

is a collection of mantras (spiritual signs) addressed to a number of deities of
Indian spiritual and religious culture. These deities are commonly known as Gods
and Goddesses. They are symbols of faith (Sraddha) and they take care of various
desires of their devotees and are supposed to satisfy them. Since these Gods and
Goddesses are symbols of Sraddha of their devotees, the devotees find a sense of
happiness in praising them.
This volume provides a good collection of mantras
along with their English translation. It is hoped that the devotees will use
these mantras as per their symbol of Sraddha with full understanding and
devotion to get whatever they want as per their prescribed method of
