The Imitation of
Sankara Price: Rs.200 Contents: 1. Prologue. 2. Brahman. 3. Self-identity. 4. The Means. 5. Liberation. 6. Conclusion. Index. The present collection here is not entirely from the works of Sankara, but from all works bearing on the philosophy taught by Sankara and his followers. The whole collection is being divided into sections and sub-sections with a view to exhaust the main topics of the absolute philosophy. Texts from the Upanisads and other works are often referred to in Vedanta writings. That almost every important reference of this kind may easily be traced to its place in this collection, where it should be found in its entirety with translation, a careful alphabetical index has been appended in the end. Another index puts together the principal points of this philosophy, and directs even the most casual reader to whatever information this book can give on the questions and its bearings. Words not Englished in the text have been collected together for explanation in an index, to which the reader may conveniently refer For copies contact at your nearest bookseller or Indian Books Centre Phone no: 91-11-2384 6497, 2384 4930 A Leading Bookshop for books from India :Indian Books Centre ...

ComparativeSurvey
of Hindu Christian and Jewish Mysticism |
Contents: Foreword. Introduction. I. Introductory : General considerations regarding mysticism: 1. Hindu mysticism. 2. Buddhist mysticism. II. The Mysticism of : 1. Isa Upanisad. 2. Katha Upanisad. 3. Mundaka Upanisad. 4. Kena Upanisad. III. Christian mysticism: 1. The cloud of unknowing. IV. Kabbalistic (Jewish) mysticism. V. Conclusions. Appendix : i. Psychedelic experience. ii. Modern physics and mysticism•the quantum factor. Bibliography. Glossary. Index. "The present book is a comparative and evaluative study of Hindu, Christian, and Jewish mysticism. Not much work is done in the field, though there are sketchy studies of any two of these schools and not all together. Again the author has taken within his scope, not only the three schools of Vedanta, but has considered the four important Upanisad viz. Isa, Kena, Katha, and Mundaka. He has also rightly considered Buddhism. His study of these is through and understanding very clear. He has then dealt with Christianity, with reference to the New Testament and the Christian mystics. He has drawn on their works copiously. Being a practicing Jew himself, his study of Judaism and Kabbalah is thorough and gives a complete insight into these religious systems. The most important addition is the study of a great work, "The Cloud of Unknowing " by an unknown author, who appears to be a Catholic Christian and who chose to remain anonymous." Full of practical information, this is a resource that you’ll use over and over again, and you may want to give it to a friend. "The Weissmans teach mediation retreats at the Wat Kow Tahm Meditation Center in Thailand. They also teach in the United States and at their center in Australia. ISBN 81-7030-679-5 About the Book The world is full of confused people running around aimlessly, waiting for life to happen. Caught in maze of mirrors, we spend most of our time bumping into the walls of confusion and chaos we have created. In term of Buddhist reality, we have been swallowed up by our ego-1, which determines our relationship with world. Meeting the Monkey Halfway is a spiritual instruction book that presents perspectives from the Buddha's view of the world and is offered as a remedial treatment. just as medicines are intended to deal with dysfunction, illness and injury, this spiritual path is meant to serve as a tool to bring radiating peace into our hearts and return us to our natural state of bliss. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ISBN: 81-7030-606-X, Series: Bibliotheca Indo-Buddhica Series No.196 About the Book Indian Buddhist philosophers say that it is possible to achieve, by specific meditational techniques, a distinctive ‘altered state’ which they call ‘the attainment of cessation’. In this state, the stream of mental events is temporarily brought to a complete halt: the practitioner becomes mindless. The possibility and desirability of such an altered state was extensively discussed by Buddhist thinkers in India. In these discussions, they were compelled to consider the causal connections between the mental and the physical, and thus to clarify their positions on what in the west has usually been called the mind-body problem. On Being Mindless presents these discussions to an English speaking readership for the first time, including analysis and translation of texts not previously available in English and, in some cases, of material not available in any Western language. Opposing fashionably relativistic approaches to non-Western philosophical traditions, Paul Griffiths critically comments upon the analyses of mindlessness given by Buddhist thinkers. He maintains that “the functions, nature, and limits of rationality are conceived similarly in all cultures” and rejects” that humility which, all too often in those Western academic circles where the study of Buddhist thought is carried on, refuses to take its material with philosophical seriousness”. On Being Mindless is a study in cross-cultural philosophy which should do much to increase awareness among Western scholars of the precision and subtlety of India Philosophical thinking. It may also encourage Western philosophers to look beyond the barriers of their own culture and language for serious philosophical analysis. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ISBN: 81-7030-244-7, Series: Studies in Indian Tradition Series No. 1 About the Book This new translation, drawings its inspiration from both careful scholarship and yogic practice, offers innovative features in that it: provides a full grammatical analysis of each term used by Patanjali, including an analysis of word compounds. Emphasizes the style and flow of the central author, rather than deferring to later commentaries. Includes a concise introduction, surveying earlier scholarship on the text and highlighting what the translators perceive to be its central theme: the process of subtilization. Uses consistent translation of Sanskrit terms such as artha (purpose) and visaya (condition), whereas prior translations have often given more than one translation for the same Sanskrit word. Selectively retains technical vocabulary in the original, thus challenging the reader to expand his or her linguistic horizons by assimilating Sanskrit terms such as purusa, prakrit, guna and dharma. A Sannkrit word index and Bibliography of prior translations are included. Other Book by the same Author 1. Nonviolence to Animals, Earth & Self in Asian

ISBN: 81-7030-138-6, Series: Sri Garib das Oriental Series No. 63 From the preface: "Much has been written about Yoga ever since the Theosophists "discovered" spiritual India, and not a little of a very uninformed nature which, in place of elucidating a complex mental science, has either perplexed the student or rendered the whole subject ridiculous. In this book it is my intention to abide by facts and simultaneously introduce sufficient cross references to other mystical systems, such as western magic and the Qabalah, to show that Yoga is one of a series of means of deliverance from worldly illusions. All these systems are closely related; for, in one sense, they and many others, such as Christian mysticism, Quietism, Buddhism, Taoism and Sufism, are spiritual languages the words of which differ in sound but the meanings of which are identical." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For Copies contact at your nearest bookshop or Indian Books Centre Request a Complete Catalogue |

The Imitation of
Buddha - Quotations from Buddhist Literature for Each
Day.. |
The Imitation of
Buddha Price Rs. 200 About the Book In this compilation no attempt has been made to present a general view of Buddhism as a religious or philosophical system. The aim has rather to turn Buddhism to account as a moral force by bringing together a selection of its beautiful sentiments and lofty maxims, and particularly by including some of those which inculcate mercy to lower animals. In the average Buddhist treatise , with its earnest exhortations, recurring as a matter of course , to show mercy on every living thing; and this difference along is an adequate reason for compiling a Buddhist anthology. The author has here supplied those who buy and use the book with rubies and sapphires and emeralds of wisdom, compassion and human brotherhood, any one of which, worn on the heart, would be sufficient to make the wearer rich beyond estimation for a day. Authoritative
Guide to Indian Philosophy |
Tradition and Reflection Contents: About the Book This book examines, above all, the relationship between reason and Vedic revelation, and the philosophical responses to the idea of the Veda. It deals with such topics as dharma, karma and rebirth, the role of man in the universe, the motivation and justification of human actions, the relationship between ritual norms and universal ethics, and reflections on the goals and sources of human knowledge. Halbfass presents previously unknown materials concerning the history of sectarian movements, including the notorious "Thags" (thaka), and relations between Indian and Iranian thought. The approach is partly philosophical and partly historical and philological; to a certain extent, it is also comparative. The author explores indigenous Indian reflections on the sources, the structure and the meaning of the Hindu tradition, and traditional philosophical responses to social and historical realities. He does not deal with social and historical realities per se; rather, basing his work on the premise that to understand these realities the reflections and constructions of traditional Indian theorists are no less significant than the observations and paradigms of modern western historians and social scientists, he explores the self-understanding of such leading thinkers as Sankara, Kumarila, Bhartrhari and Udayana. "This book permits us to penetrate within one of the most
ancient ascetic spirituality, that followed by some 6000 Jaina women
ascetics. "Written with their collaboration, it presents to the reader
their life of radical renunciation of which one of the hallmarks is
incessant pilgrimage, a regular shifting from one place to the next in a
sustained striving towards self-purification, a striving of which the
final goal is Nirvana. "Here then we have before us the whole Jaina tradition,
presented through scriptures, ancient texts, biographies, epigraphy and
iconography. Here too we may observe its outworking in contemporary daily
life and its contribution to inter-cultural and inter-monastic
encounter. "This book permits us to penetrate within one of the most ancient ascetic spirituality, that followed by some 6000 Jaina women ascetics. "Furthermore, it is not without interest that this study finds its own proper place in an age which is rediscovering feminine values. At a time when so many people are taking a deep interest in Asian spiritualities we find here an original and strictly defined spiritual path and also a spiritual teaching whose strength and subtlety merit our attention and invites us to embark on an authentic spiritual journey." The Rg-Veda :
Hymns of the Rg-Veda/Translated by H.H. Wilson. Reprint. Delhi, Satguru,
2002, 6 Vols. |
"In 1805 H.T. Colebrooke, wrote an elaborate essay on the Vedas in the Asiatic Researches. This essay created a lot of interest in Europe to take up Vedic studies seriously. The efforts to study were directed towards three points: 1. Critical editions of the Vedic text. 2. Translations of those texts and. 3. Study of those texts in order to get acquainted with ancient Indian Culture and Philosophy. "It was H.H. Wilson, who for the first time translated entirely the Rgveda into English. H.H. Wilson based his English translation on the commentary of Sayanacharya and has given his own interpretations in the notes wherever there are differences with the commentary. This is prose English translation of the Rgveda with exhaustive notes." Thanking You Naresh Gupta

"For a span of more than 50 years Ma Anandamayi treaded gracefully the spiritual horizon of India -- and in her wake followed top dignitaries, as well as the lowliest of the lowly, enchanted by her gentle dispensation of wisdom and love to all... To the man in the street she was the guru' and confidante of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. All V.I.Ps visiting India made an appointment with her an item in their itineraries. No big religious function was held anywhere in the country without an invitation to her for her gracious and radiant presence on the dais. The keepers of our heritage -- the ascetic orders of India were united in recognizing Ma Anandamayi as the quintessence of the Upanishadic tradition....scholars trained in modern universities derived inspiration from her. Ma Anandamayi by her presence in our midst during the most difficult decades of our times, consolidated our past and taught how to live in the very demanding times of the twentieth century and face up to the challenge of the twenty first. She was born in India but in herself she belongs to humanity (Colin Turnbull). Swami Sivananda (Divine Life Society) had said that she was the finest flower that the soil of India had produced. Such question as whether she was an incarnation, a Siddha Yogin or the adya sakti (Pandit Gopinath Kaviraj) used to sink into irrelevancies in her presence. She was for everyone, man, women and child from all corners of the world, a guide of infallible power, a friend of unfailing compassion and understanding. To Ma Anandamayi, there was no one who was an 'other'. In her we touched a dimension of unity which encompassed all religions and all countries. Each person in her presence found fulfilment and her presence is ever-abiding Contents: Preface. 1. The places where Sri Ma Anandamayi lived as a child. 2. From childhood of maturity. 3. Price: Rs. 500 Contents: Introduction. 1. The Vedic background. 2. In the Smrti context. 3. Tantrik involvements. 4. Myths and legends. 5. Forms for worship. From the introduction: "Ganesa's popularity is manifold. He is the favourite God of the masses. He is also the favourite subject for curio-hunters and collectors of icons. Painters and sculptors have revelled in depicting this God in a variety of forms and postures. The Tantrik practitioners have found in him a benevolent power, quick to acquire and enduring in nature. There is no religious group in the country which dispenses with his services. And more importantly, Ganesa has been subjected to endless enquiry about his origin, nature, significance, symbolism and cultic involvement. Research scholars have surrounded him with diverse theories: sociological, anthropological, cultural, historical, literary and linguistic, political and economic answers are suggested to be the secret of his popularity; agriculture, hunting, elephant capture, formation of early totemistic communities, and strife amongst them are sought to be seen in the background of this deity. Excessive use of imagination appears to be the undercurrent in all such studies, which have also incidentally brought to surface many interesting aspects of Ganesa-worship. Literature about Ganesa is remarkable, varied and large. Every Indian language has works bearing on this deity and on his worship. Works in Sanskrit, which appear to have provided the main source material for all of them, are themselves large in number and varied in nature : puranas, kalpas, paddhatis, sadhanas, vidhis and namavalis. Representations of Ganesa in stone, metal, clay and wood, and in painting are equally numerous and varied." ====

2. Ganapati : Song of the Self/ John A. Grimes. Reprint. 1996,.Delhi.Sri Satguru. xx, 231 p., figures, Price: Rs. 345
"Ganapati : Song of the Self
presents a wide-range of information about Ganapati/Ganesa, the Hindu Lord
of beginnings, the keeper of the threshold, the remover of obstacles,
master of the mind, son of Siva, elephant-headed, plump and loveable,
gathered from such diverse sources as hymns, poems, myths, shrines,
practices, and theologies. However, besides being a handy reference work,
the book is also an attempt to understand this information from within a
tradition, and further, to follow how that understanding may have
universal connotations. "Ganapati is found everywhere: in
temples, in wayside shrines, in homes, in devotee's hearts. His praises

meaning? Who is he really? Side by side, seemingly incongruous facts are
simultaneously found. Ganapati: An enormous popularity which transcends
sectarian and territorial limits; a seemingly rather late, yet dramatic,
full-blown appearance into a religious pantheon; a confusing, conflicting,
yet interesting and intriguing mythology; and an elephant's head atop a
plump human body! This book considers this complexity of Ganapati lore and
presents possible ways of understanding it." "Ganapati : Song of the Self presents a wide-range of information about Ganapati/Ganesa, the Hindu Lord of beginnings, the keeper of the threshold, the remover of obstacles, master of the mind, son of Siva, elephant-headed, plump and loveable, gathered from such diverse sources as hymns, poems, myths, shrines, practices, and theologies. However, besides being a handy reference work, the book is also an attempt to understand this information from within a tradition, and further, to follow how that understanding may have universal connotations. "This book examines the complete Ganesh
for the first time. Here is the God in his multiple forms from the
different geographical areas in Asia. Particularly important are chapters
that deal with his Buddhist and tantric forms. The controversial question

Umapati's Commentary on the Pauskaratantra,
Chapter 7. Pramana/translated by Usha Colas-Chauhan.
Delhi, Sri Satguru Pub., 2007, viii, 300 p., $28.
ISBN 81-7030-857-7.
Contents: Acknowledgements. 1. Introduction. 2. Translation. 3. Text. Abbreviations and bibliography. "The Pauskara, belonging to the class of literature generally known as Tantra or Agama, is an important text for the comprehension of Saiva philosophy. The seventh chapter of its doctrinal section (jnanapada) is not only a remarkable source of information on Saiva epistemology, but also a gold-mine of significant elements valuable for the study of early Indian logic. Umapati's commentary on this chapter introduces new features, sometimes in a post-15 century Navyanyaya dialectical style, and bears testimony to the evolution of Saiva epistemology. This translation aims to bring an important aspect of Saiva philosophy to the attention of scholars and to facilitate comparative studies of Saiva epistemology." Contents: Acknowledgements. 1. Encyclopaedia of
Indian Iconography : Hinduism--Buddhism—Jainism/S.K. Ramachandra
Rao |
"The present publication, Encyclopaedia of Indian Iconography, is intended to focus attention on the traditional details concerning images and their worship. The details given in these volumes are taken entirely from the traditional texts of Agama and Silpa-sastra, like Brhatsamhita, Manasara, Kasyapa-silpa, Isana-siva-guru-deva-paddhati, Silpa-ratna, Padma-samhita, Hayasirsa-samhita, Vaikhanasagama and Rupa-mandana. The entries include not only the Gods and Goddesses of popular so-called Hinduism, but also the divinities of Jaina (both Digambara and Svetambara divisions) and Buddhist (Mahayana) religions. The deities worshipped in Nepal and Tibet are also included. Sadhana-mala has been used for descriptions of Buddhist deities, and Rupa-mandana for Jaina deities. Most of the entries are illustrated by line-drawings of images in temples, monasteries, basadis and in museums. Topics of peripheral interest (like temple-construction, image-making worship rituals and Agama divisions) have also been included here. "The volumes follow the Sanskrit alphabetical order (akaradi) to facilitate translation into Indian languages. The first volume begins with the words beginning with vowels in Sanskrit alphabet. Followed with mute consonants and the rest of the consonants in the subsequent volumes. "Among various and synonymous names of the deities, the better known ones have been selected for entry, while cross-references also have been indicated. Wherever necessary, background stories for particular iconographical representations have been given." Thanking You Naresh Gupta
