MANAGING COUNCIL MEETING-12-6-16

Members present: Gary Wright, Ingrid Appelhagen, Gale Boldt, Carol Settlage, Dave Williams, Patricia Gayman and Jim Brunsman

Gary opened the meeting with a prayer and Victoria Williams spoke to the council regarding projects planned by the Aesthetics Committee. The pew reupholstering project is moving along gradually and Victoria displayed the final fabric choices selected by the committee among many options. Many factors are involved in this selection including texture, color pattern, cost, and more. Members of the congregation interested in this process are invited to vote on the final selection of fabric some time in January.
Victoria also reported on the status of the sound insulating panels proposed for the social hall. The plan involves placing decorative sound panels on the south and west walls of the social hall. We are currently soliciting bids on the project and Victoria is scheduled to meet with an acoustics expert at Mother Center next week.
Gale Boldt reported on his research concerning security patrols for the Center and the council discussed different options for combating vagrancy on the property. One suggestion is to install a wrought iron fence for the driveway and the open area on the east side of the property. Gary is planning to seek estimates for this project. We also discussed security cameras placed in strategic locations around the Center connected to a wireless system which would allow for remote monitoring. The council voted ultimately to try a security service on a once nightly basis for one month. The council will analyze the results of this one month trial to determine whether this is an effective deterrent.
The council also voted to approve a $125.00 grant for Sunday School teachers who wish to attend training workshops held in southern California twice a year. Self-Realization Fellowship encourages Sunday School teachers to attend this training if possible and we want to encourage teachers who may have financial challenges to participate.
Ingrid spoke on issues related to the landscape committee. She said that bids for a decorative curb to replace crumbling asphalt near the flower beds were prohibitively expensive and the decision was made to install treated wood in place of professional curbing. Ingrid also mentioned that some invasive hackberry roots need to be eliminated and there was a brief discussion of how to do this. Rather than utilizing a tree stump specialist, the council decided to try other methods to eradicate the problem.
The Center archive project was discussed without coming to a definitive conclusion. Due to a range of opinions on the subject, the council voted  to discuss the matter with Brother Devananda when he meets with the Managing Council on January 26 during his visit. The council discussed the monastic visit at length and the schedule has been approved by Brother Devananda. A few minor details remain to be finalized and we conferred about Haig Koobatian’s memorial service, which is scheduled for Sunday, January 29 immediately following our reading service. Brother Devananda called to discuss the highlights of the meeting and confirmed some of the details for January’s monastic visit. The next Managing Council meeting is slated for January 10.

Respectfully submitted,
Jim Brunsman
