A recently developed, weathering steel grade could be ideal for structures such as container cranes, which are exposed to fatigueloading and corrosive and/or cold environments. The steel was developed by Northwestern University (NWU), in Evanston, Illinois, in co-operation with Inland Steel Company (now part of Mittal Steel USA), and with support from the Federal Highway Administration and the Illinois DoT.

This grade steel is a high-strength, low alloy steel plate. Kloeckner offers A5656 in four different grades, including 50, 60, 70, and 80, and in three chemical requirements, type 3, type 7, and type 8. This specific steel has good formability, weldability, and notch toughness when in the as-rolled condition. It does well in low and ambient temperatures and, due to its strengths, it is typically used in the construction industry. Some common applications include truck frames, construction equipment, crane booms, and general fabrication.
Some common applications for the A656 steel are crane booms, rail car components, and truck frames. Other applications include construction and agricultural equipment, heavy vehicle frames, and transport trailers.
