On July 4, 1834, Plymouth Rock was on the move again, this time a few blocks north to the front lawn of the Pilgrim Hall Museum. And once again, the boulder had a rough ride. While passing the courthouse, the rock fell from a cart and broke in two on the ground. The small iron fence encircling Plymouth Rock did little to discourage the stream of souvenir seekers from wielding their hammers and chisels to get a piece of the rock. (Even today, chips off the old block are strewn across the country in places such as the Smithsonian Institution and the Plymouth Church in Brooklyn.)

I'm a mortgage loan officer that about a month ago referred my client to Rock the Score. He had no credit scores to qualify for a VA Loan. His rent history was perfect over the last 2 years. It was a seamless process to sign up, and 4 weeks later his credit scores appeared, and qualified for a 2.75% VA loan. He is closing on a new home in 2 weeks time. Thanks Rock the Score for performing as advertised!

Let this PSA not only remind you to vote, but also that the days of unabashed blonde-ogling rock stars are thankfully (mostly) behind us. In this spot, the members of Aerosmith list defendable freedoms like wearing whipped cream as clothing (originally it was Joe Perry wearing it, according to someone in the prop department), using bodily fluids as art supplies and not inhaling. The band continued to publicly advocate for voting as recently as 2012 with a free show outside the Boston apartment where the band first cut their teeth.

"Vote, baby, vote. Are you registered, Baby?" are the full lyrics of the Deee-Lite song seemingly tailor-made to subsequently become a Rock the Vote PSA. Known mostly for their club hit "Groove is in the Heart," Lady Miss Kier's band became more vocal about their social consciousness on their sophomore album, Infinity Within, which contains their voting anthem. The album was the first CD to be issued with an EcoPack, which decreases plastic packaging by more than half. Lady Miss Kier also appeared in the powerful "Most Exciting Woman in Music" television spot advocating for women's reproductive rights alongside female rock icons like Kim Gordon, MC Lyte and Tina Weymouth of the B-52s.

As America prepared for the historic Obama-McCain presidential election in the summer of 2008, Christina Aguilera starred in a Rock the Vote PSA singing a stripped-down but powerful rendition of "America the Beautiful." While she sang, she rocked her five-month-old son Max, who was wrapped in an American flag. "It was really important for me to get involved and get excited about this election in particular," said Aguilera at the time, "being such one of change and new development for our country and for the future of my son." The evocative television spot was a deliberate homage to Madonna's sexy flag-draped scene from 18 years earlier. "Instead of wrapping myself, I would wrap my son. Sort of pass it on to the next generation," she explained.

Here, prickly pear and other cacti along with little bluestem and additional grasses dot the landscape, while endangered leafy rock quillwort fills the transient vernal pools. Down below, buttonbush, switchgrass and muhly occur along Big Sandy Creek. This splendid Hill Country habitat supports wildlife like rock and fox squirrels, as well as armadillos, rabbits and white-tailed deer.

The legendary dome was once one of many in a batholithic area encompassing 60 square miles on the border of Gillespie and Llano counties. By setting aside this cultural landmark, TNC helped spare Enchanted Rock from the fate of other exposed batholiths that were heavily quarried to construct buildings and structures such as coastal jetties. More than 250,000 visitors experience the magical views offered atop the granite dome every year, which still stands as the second-largest hill made of bedrock in the United States.

Where do I begin with this kitchen? I truly love this space so, so much. Because we had a hefty budget and full design authority, I wanted to create the kitchen of my dreams, Charleston-style. Dave and I agreed at the start of this competition to design and build this home for a family. And, the most important room in any home is the kitchen. It needed to be beautiful, functional, spacious and family-friendly. I needed to incorporate the coastal feel of Charleston, along with the history of this special city.

Originally constructed between 688 and 692 under the rule of Abd al-Malik, whom Yitzchak introduced in the previous post, the Dome of the Rock is one of the most emblematic architectural landmarks in the history of Islamic culture. On the one hand, the monument carries a unique and unifying significance for Islamic religious communities over broad temporal and geographic scopes; on the other hand, it reflects the far-reaching extent of intercultural contacts and dialogues that have shaped such Islamic communities over time, on a local level.

Much larger, weighing in at 100 pounds, the second hunk of rock was once part of a 400-pound portion owned by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society. The organization came into possession of the rock in the 1920s; it bought the Sandwich Street Harlow House, where the stone was being used as a doorstep. The society ended up breaking the 400-pound rock into three pieces, and the museum acquired one in 1985.

Stratigraphy is the study of the rock layering, and reveals a wealth of information about what Earth was like when each layer formed. In the Grand Canyon, there are clear horizontal layers of different rocks that provide information about where, when, and how they were deposited, long before the canyon was even carved. The Law of Superposition states that sediment is deposited in layers in a sequence, the oldest rocks are on the bottom and the youngest rocks are on the top, similar to the way that sand piles up in an hour glass. This principle is a key part of determining the relative age of a rock layer. The three main rock layer sets in the Grand Canyon are grouped based on position and common composition and 1) Metamorphic basement rocks, 2) The Precambrian Grand Canyon Supergroup, and 3) Paleozoic strata. These three main sets of rocks were first described by the explorer and scientist John Wesley Powell during his expeditions of the Grand Canyon in the late 1860s and early 1870s.

The three main types of rock are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rocks are cooled magma (melted rock found underground) or lava (molten rock found above ground). Granite (cooled from magma, known as an intrusive igneous rock) and basalt (cooled from lava, known as an extrusive igneous rock) are two types of igneous rocks. Sedimentary rocks are formed by smaller pieces of sand and mud stick together in layers. Examples include: sandstone, mudstone ,shale, siltsone, limestone, and more. Sedimentary rocks often contain fossils that can be used to help identify the age of the rock. Certain fossils, called index fossils, are particularly useful because they are abundant in a relatively narrow time range. Over time, pressure increases as sediment increases, and minerals help form these rock layers. Metamorphic rocks are formed when sedimentary or igneous rocks change due to exposure to heat and/or pressure. All three rock types can be found in the Grand Canyon, and each layer adds an important understanding to the geologic history of the region.

The middle rock set, the Grand Canyon Supergroup, is primarily sandstone and mudstone, both sedimentary rocks, with some areas of igneous rock. They are from the late Proterozoic, only slightly younger than the metamorphic basement rocks. These rocks do not contain many fossils, because they formed before complex life on Earth was common. The few fossils that are present include stromatolites, columns of sediment formed by cyanobacteria. The composition (sandstone) and presence of stromatolites indicate that this area was previously a very shallow sea. The rock layers in the Grand Canyon Supergroup have been tilted, whereas the other rocks above this set are horizontal. This is known as an angular unconformity. The top of these sediment layers was then eroded away, forming the Great Unconformity.

These layers are sedimentary, and primarily sandstone. This set makes up most of the typical reddish layers that you often see in images, and which come to mind when thinking of the Grand Canyon. Following the Great Unconformity, this set is much younger than the other rock layers, and fossils are prevalent. The most common fossils are small sea creatures, such as brachiopods, bryozoans, coral, and crinoids. Combined with the sandstone, this tells us that the region was a warm, shallow sea when these sediments were deposited.

A key feature of the Grand Canyon is, unsurprisingly, the canyon itself. The width and depth make it truly remarkable and expose the rock layers that were discussed above. After all the rocks were deposited, there was a period of uplift (where plate tectonics literally force a section of the Earth upward), setting the stage for canyon formation. It provided a high enough elevation that water could flow downward, cutting through the rock as it went. This incredible formation was carved over millions of years by the Colorado River. The canyon itself has formed much more recently than the deposition of rock layers, only about five million years ago (as opposed to the rocks, the youngest of which are a little less than 300 million years old). The canyon has since been forming at varying rates, with periods of intense erosion carving the canyon. The river must have had periods of quick movement, carving deep, not only wide.
