Thank you again for participating in the Economics and Benefits
Analysis Specialty Group (EBASG) of the Society for Risk Analysis
(SRA). We are beginning to plan for what promises to be an exciting
December 2010 Annual Meeting, and hope you will join us. Here are some
ideas on how to get involved.
(1) Submit an abstract for a symposium, individual presentation, or
poster for the SRA Annual Meeting (DEADLINE: JUNE 4).
By now, you should have received the call for abstracts for the
December 2010 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City. (Detailed information
is available at http://www.sra.org/events_2010_meeting.php.) We hope
you will submit a proposal to present your work, either individually
or as part of a symposium.
Presentations are welcome on a wide range of topics. A few examples
include:
1. Determining the implications of behavioral economics for risk
analysis, management, and/or regulation.
2. Proposing and evaluating new ideas for risk management policies,
regulations, or programs.
3. Implementing innovative methods for assessing benefits, costs,
distributional impacts and equity, nonquantified effects, and/or
uncertainty.
4. Valuing nonmarket benefits, including health and longevity,
environmental effects, or other outcomes.
5. Improving institutional roles in developing and assessing risk
management regulations and policies, nationally and/or
internationally.
6. Communicating the results of benefit-cost analyses, cost-
effectiveness analyses, or other analyses applied to particular policy
areas.
7. Enhancing the use and usefulness of economic analysis in risk
management decisions.
8. Assessing financial risks as well as environmental, health, and
safety risks.
We encourage you to organize a symposium that includes up to 5 papers
(or up to 15 posters) providing different perspectives on a particular
topic area (e.g., behaviorally-informed regulation, health risk
valuation, benefit-cost analysis), or a particular policy area (e.g.,
climate change, drinking water contamination, food or transportation
safety). Related information is available at http://birenheide.com/sra/2010AM/form.php3;
additional information is provided on the submission form. We would be
happy to help you organize your session and identify additional
participants as needed.
If you have any questions about individual submissions or would like
help in organizing a symposium, please feel free to reply to this
email or to contact any of the EBASG officers at the email addresses
below.
(2) Apply for an EBASG Student Merit Award (DEADLINE: JUNE 4).
If you are a graduate student working in economics or a closely
related field, we hope you will submit an abstract for the 2010 EBASG
Student Merit Award. (See http://www.sra.org/ebasg/award.html for more
information and past award winners.) This award provides $500 and
waives the meeting registration fee for the student who submits the
best abstract in this area. You must attend the meeting and present
your research to receive the award. Note that this merit award is
independent of the need-based travel awards provided for students and
international applicants to attend the Annual Meeting, and you may
apply for both programs.
If you are interested in being considered, when submitting your
abstract through the SRA website, please be sure to enter EBASG in the
box under “Specialty Group for Student Paper Competition” and also
check “yes” next to Student Merit Award at the bottom of the form.
(3) Organize a workshop (DEADLINE: JUNE 8).
We are now considering options for developing EBASG workshops to be
held in advance of the December meeting, and hope you will suggest
topics of interest. Workshops can be primarily educational, or can be
designed to develop a product such as an expert advisory report on an
issue of concern to participants. If you would like to suggest a
topic, to work with us to plan an event, or to develop an EBASG
workshop independently, please reply to this email or contact any of
the EBASG officers at the email addresses below.
Detailed policies are available on the conferences and workshops page
in the “members only” section of the SRA website (http://www.sra.org/
conferences+workshops_committee.php). You must log in with your member
number to access these pages. Related forms should be available soon
in the Annual Meeting section of the website.
(4) Help Us Improve Our Website and Join the EBASG Discussion Group
Please visit our website (http://www.sra.org/ebasg/) and let us know
how we can improve it. We welcome ideas for announcements to post on
the home page and additional guidance documents or other items to
include on our links page; other suggestions and comments would be
greatly appreciated. You can also join the EBASG Google Discussion
Group by clicking on the discussion group link in the side menu, or
going directly to http://groups.google.com/group/sra-ebasg.
(5) Pay Dues
As always, please don't forget to pay your dues! They are only $10
annually, and help support our events at the December annual meeting
as well as other activities. Information on payment is available at:
http://www.sra.org/ebasg/membership.html.
Please feel free to contact any of the EBASG officers with your
questions, suggestions, or concerns: Lisa Robinson, Chair
(Lisa.A....@comcast.net); Amber Jessup, Vice-Chair
(Amber....@hhs.gov); Dominic Mancini, Immediate Past-Chair
(Dominic_J...@omb.eop.gov); or Aylin Sertkaya, Secretary/
Treasurer (Aylin.S...@erg.com).
We look forward to hearing from you!
