To take advantage of the GPU capabilities of Azure N-series VMs backed by NVIDIA GPUs, you must install NVIDIA GPU drivers. The NVIDIA GPU Driver Extension installs appropriate NVIDIA CUDA or GRID drivers on an N-series VM. Install or manage the extension using the Azure portal or tools such as Azure PowerShell or Azure Resource Manager templates. See the NVIDIA GPU Driver Extension documentation for supported operating systems and deployment steps.

If you choose to install NVIDIA GPU drivers manually, this article provides supported operating systems, drivers, and installation and verification steps. Manual driver setup information is also available for Linux VMs.

As an alternative to manual CUDA driver installation on a Windows Server VM, you can deploy an Azure Data Science Virtual Machine image. The DSVM editions for Windows Server 2016 pre-install NVIDIA CUDA drivers, the CUDA Deep Neural Network Library, and other tools.

For Azure NVads A10 v5 VMs we recommend customers to always be on the latest driver version. The latest NVIDIA major driver branch(n) is only backward compatbile with the previous major branch(n-1). For eg, vGPU 17.x is backward compatible with vGPU 16.x only. Any VMs still runnig n-2 or lower may see driver failures when the latest drive branch is rolled out to Azure hosts.

Microsoft redistributes NVIDIA GRID driver installers for NV, NVv3 and NVads A10 v5-series VMs used as virtual workstations or for virtual applications. Install only these GRID drivers on Azure NV-series VMs, only on the operating systems listed in the following table. These drivers include licensing for GRID Virtual GPU Software in Azure. You don't need to set up a NVIDIA vGPU software license server.

The GRID drivers redistributed by Azure don't work on non-NV series VMs like NCv2, NCv3, ND, and NDv2-series VMs. The one exception is the NCas_T4_V3 VM series where the GRID drivers enable the graphics functionalities similar to NV-series.

vGPU 15.1/15.2 installer process makes an additional remote call to ngx.download.nvidia.com. This is an unexpected change in behavior and NVIDIA will disable this by default starting with vGPU 15.3 or higher. In the meantime, update the following regkey before installing vGPU 15.1/15.2 driver.

Run nvidia-smi. If the driver is installed, you will see output similar to the following. The GPU-Util shows 0% unless you are currently running a GPU workload on the VM. Your driver version and GPU details may be different from the ones shown.

RDMA network connectivity can be enabled on RDMA-capable N-series VMs such as NC24r deployed in the same availability set or in a single placement group in a virtual machine scale set. The HpcVmDrivers extension must be added to install Windows network device drivers that enable RDMA connectivity. To add the VM extension to an RDMA-enabled N-series VM, use Azure PowerShell cmdlets for Azure Resource Manager.

An instance with an attached NVIDIA GPU, such as a P3 or G4dn instance, must have theappropriate NVIDIA driver installed. Depending on the instance type, you can eitherdownload a public NVIDIA driver, download a driver from Amazon S3 that is available only toAWS customers, or use an AMI with the driver pre-installed.

These drivers are intended primarily for compute workloads, which useGPUs for computational tasks such as parallelized floating-pointcalculations for machine learning and fast Fourier transforms for highperformance computing applications.

These drivers are certified to provide optimal performance forprofessional visualization applications that render content such as 3Dmodels or high-resolution videos. You can configure GRID drivers tosupport two modes. Quadro Virtual Workstations provide access to four 4Kdisplays per GPU. GRID vApps provide RDSH App hostingcapabilities.

On Windows, the Tesla drivers are configured to run in Tesla Compute Cluster(TCC) mode. The GRID and gaming drivers are configured to run in Windows DisplayDriver Model (WDDM) mode. In TCC mode, the card is dedicated to computeworkloads. In WDDM mode, the card supports both compute and graphicsworkloads.

If you create a custom Windows AMI using one of the AWS Marketplaceofferings, the AMI must be a standardized image created with Windows Sysprep to ensure that the GRID driver works. For more information, see Create an AMI with Windows Sysprep.

The options offered by AWS come with the necessary license for the driver.Alternatively, you can install the public drivers and bring your own license. Toinstall a public driver, download it from the NVIDIA site as describedhere.

Alternatively, you can use the options offered by AWS instead of the publicdrivers. To use a GRID driver on a P3 instance, use the AWS Marketplace AMIs as describedin Option 1. To use a GRIDdriver on a G6, Gr6, G5, G4dn, or G3 instance, use the AWS Marketplace AMIs as described in Option1 or install the NVIDIA drivers provided by AWS as described in Option 3: GRID drivers (G6, Gr6, G5, G4dn, and G3 instances).

Disable the display adapter named Microsoft Basic DisplayAdapter that is marked with a warning icon using DeviceManager. Install these Windows features: MediaFoundation and Quality Windows Audio VideoExperience.

Don't disable the display adapter named Microsoft RemoteDisplay Adapter. If Microsoft RemoteDisplay Adapter is disabled your connection might beinterrupted and attempts to connect to the instance after it hasrebooted might fail.

These downloads are available to AWS customers only. By downloading, inorder to adhere to requirements of the AWS solution referred to in the NVIDIAGRID Cloud End User License Agreement (EULA), you agree to use the downloadedsoftware only to develop AMIs for use with the NVIDIA L4, NVIDIA A10G, NVIDIA Tesla T4,or NVIDIA Tesla M60 hardware. Upon installation of the software, you are boundby the terms of the NVIDIA GRID Cloud End User License Agreement. For information aboutthe version of the NVIDIA GRID driver for your operating system, see the NVIDIA Virtual GPU (vGPU) SoftwareDocumentation on the NVIDIAwebsite.

For Windows instances, if you launch your instance from a custom Windows AMI, the AMI must be a standardized image created with Windows Sysprep to ensure that the GRID driver works. For more information, see Create an AMI with Windows Sysprep.

Multiple versions of the NVIDIA GRID driver are stored in this bucket. You can download all of the available Windows versions in the bucket byremoving the -KeyPrefix $KeyPrefix option. For informationabout the version of the NVIDIA GRID driver for your operating system, see the NVIDIA Virtual GPU(vGPU) Software Documentation on the NVIDIA website.

Starting with GRID version 11.0, you can use the drivers underlatest for both G3 and G4dn instances. We willnot add versions later than 11.0 to g4/latest, butwill keep version 11.0 and the earlier versions specific to G4dn underg4/latest.

Navigate to the desktop and double-click the installation file tolaunch it (choose the driver version that corresponds to your instanceOS version). Follow the instructions to install the driver and rebootyour instance as required. To verify that the GPU is working properly, check Device Manager.

(Optional) Use the following command to disable the licensing page inthe control panel to prevent users from accidentally changing theproduct type (NVIDIA GRID Virtual Workstation is enabled by default). For more information, see the GRID Licensing User Guide.

Run the following PowerShell commands to create the registry valueto disable the licensing page in the control panel. The AWS Tools for PowerShellin AWS Windows AMIs defaults to the 32-bit version and thiscommand fails. Instead, use the 64-bit version of PowerShellincluded with the operating system.
