Hello again everyone.

With the perceived upsurge(!) in touring, I thought I would re-energise this Google Group.  It has lain dormant for a long time.

As a reminder to what we are about, see here:

I upgraded this site recently and I am not sure it was such a good idea.   Some of the older material seems to have disappeared.  Brendan Donnelly put a lot of work into that site.  I hope he has backups.

Joan and I really enjoyed our trip to Cavan last weekend.  It reminded us so much of the trips we had back in the 70's and 80's.   Again, thanks a lot to Brendan for that.   It has put us in mind of mounting regular monthly overnighters.   We will leave from point X, do no more than 40 miles and return to point X.   Point X need not be local.

Cavan was a two nighter.   To suit those unfortunates who are working, we suggest future ones are single nighters, at least until we establish a pattern.

We've not got long term dates sorted out yet (come back with ideas, please), but rough plans are as follows:

############################################################################
October:

drive to Clougher on the Friday and ride to Enniskillen, via Fintona.

All those tea stains are Joan's idea.  Nothing to do with me!  That route shows the out and back limbs.

See here:

We don't have a route for Saturday yet.   Probably round the Lower Lough Erne.

Gpx file attached.

#############################################################################
#############################################################################
November:

drive to Monaghan and ride to Innishkeen and the Kavanagh Museum

Route to be identified.

############################################################################
############################################################################
December:

Possibly to Seamus Heaney centre or other ideas welcome.

#############################################################################

Please post ideas here.

Thanks.

Having said that, Enniskillen is actually a two nighter.

People are welcome to join us on the Saturday.

As you all know, I have been a keen promoter of ViewRanger for a long time.  My main gripe with it was not so much with the software, but with the fact that I had to view the maps on my phone.  This is far from ideal.

Recently I lashed out and bought a Wahoo Roam and I am really quite impressed.  I now have the best of both worlds: I can prepare routes using VR, export the gpx files and import them into the Roam.

The advantage of the Roam are:
  1. less prone to rain than a phone
  2. 17hrs battery life
  3. secure bracketry
  4. it is not interrupted by phone calls
  5. big clunky buttons easy to use en route
  6. clear screen in both bright sunshine and dull
Disadvantages:
  1. cost!
  2. screen is small, but adequate
Wahoo has a close relationship with Komoot, which is a mapping application.  It's very good, although not as good as VR.   Compared to the OS maps on VR, the Komoot maps are impoverished.  The big advantage of Komoot is that £20 buys maps for the whole world!   Another advantage is that you can feature a starting point, a finishing point and Komoot will plot the whole route for you.   VR has limitations in that regard.

It's all super fun!
