My thoughts:
I like the idea of the hardware managing the identity. Trusted
Platform Modules (TPMs) and Trusted Drives were designed to handle
this. However the idea falls apart when we start talking about Cloud
Computing, and access from anywhere, _any device_. The whole idea with
Google's Chrome Notebook is that there is no single piece of
personalization stored on the Chrome notebook. Not even the owner's
identity. Everything is in the cloud.
We can't have hardware managing the identity in the cloud computing,
web-based paradigm.
There are other ways to address the identity issue and still be
compatible with the cloud computing. OpenID coupled with StrongAuth is
one way.
