I am on mac os high sierra running build 123 of sql workbench j. 2017-09-25 I think I essentially have a duplicate of this error but on a mac:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/sql-workbench/java$208%7Csort:date/sql-workbench/cQN_epMyM1M/V-J0kksuCwAJ

The error message reads:
“SQL Workbench/J requires Java 8, but only 10 was found.

If you do have Java 8 installed, please point JAVA_HOME to the location of your Java 8 installation or refer to manual... to specify the Java runtime...”

So i followed those instructions:

echo $JAVA_HOME
~/jre/contents/Home

But still doesn’t work.
Since I am using jre on a mac I don’t know the corresponding thing to do from the other post to use with jre on a mac; I am not a java developer, would anyone be able to help me get the program to open? What’s most frustrating is that everything worked fine last week (probably before I installed java 10 somehow?)

And since I will be helping people use this software on computers they don’t have admin rights for, any explanation to help me understand jre vs jdk, where these “shell scripts” that aren’t included in the mac installation can be found, etc, would be very helpful.

Thanks for your help!

Yes, the version check was incorrect for Java 10

You can download the current dev-build (123.4), that should fix the problem.

I had the same problem and here's how I solved it.

1. Go through uninstallation instructions below

2. Reinstall Java 8
I used  Java SE Development Kit 8u171

I am having the same issue re: java 10 vs. 8.

I don't see a link to the mac version of a dev build...

Thanks,
mike

Just download the dev-build archive and overwrite the existing sqlworkbench.jar in your current installation with the one from the dev-build ZIP file.

Thank you so much Thomas!!! I've had this thread open for 2 days in a tab I forgot about and was surprised to see not one, but two new messages in it!

I dragged the jar file into Contents/Java and it works perfectly. Now if only I can find a way to get DrJava working.
