problems installing sql server, any version

I'm trying to train myself on SSIS and am up against a problem I've
been having on both of my machines, but I'll concentrate on the laptop
right now.

I had Sql Server 2005 Evaluation version installed on my laptop at one
point. Can't remember what happened along the way, but I can't get
any version to install now.

Windows XP Home SP3
I have admin rights

First, I uninstalled all versions of VS and SS I had installed.

Installed VS 2008, and SS 2005 Express installed. Then tried
installing the SS disk, and SS Express went away from my programs
list, and ONLY SS Configuration Manager installed.

I run into same problem trying to load 2008.

What do I need to look at?
