The reactor vessel of Shin Hanul unit 2 has been installed within the reactor building, marking a major step in the construction of the second Korean-designed Advanced Pressurised Reactor-1400 (APR-1400) being built at the site.
A ceremony, attended by some 150 people, was held to mark the installation of the vessel, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on 6 April. The reactor vessel - weighing 415 tonnes, 14.8 meters in height and with a diameter of 4.6 meters - was manufactured by Doosan Heavy Industries Limited.
Ground breaking for the first two units at the Shin Hanul (formerly Shin Ulchin) site took place in early May 2012. First concrete for unit 1 took place in July 2012, with that for unit 2 following in June 2013. The reactor vessel of unit 1 was installed in May 2014. The units are expected to enter service in April 2017 and April 2018, respectively.
SEOUL, June 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea aims to nearly double the revenue in the country's marine shipping sector by 2030 and spare no efforts to help local shippers overcome the heightened competition amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the ocean ministry said Tuesday.
The ministry unveiled the plan during a launching ceremony in Busan for South Korea's No. 1 shipper HMM Co.'s new 16,000-TEU class container ship Hanul. The event was attended by President Moon Jae-in, Finance Minister Hong Nam-ki and Industry Minister Moon Sung-wook, among others.
"We will now engage in much bigger challenges. The maritime shipping industry will create opportunities for growth through enlargements of container vessels, the acceleration of transitions to eco-friendly vessels and ports, and digitalization of the maritime shipping industry," Moon said.
Sales of the country's maritime shipping industry came to 39 trillion won in 2015, but they sharply lost ground in the following years after Hanjin Shipping Co., once the world's seventh-largest shipper, tumbled and dealt a fatal blow to the industry.
The ocean ministry said the country's shipping industry has been posting a solid recovery on the back of the government's five-year revitalization plan unveiled in 2018, adding that HMM also turned a profit last year.
South Korea, however, said local shippers are expected to face more competition overseas amid the COVID-19 pandemic and vowed to raise up to $3 billion to help local shippers increase the size of their fleets.

Background Intracranial atherosclerotic stroke is prevalent in Asians. We hypothesized that patients with the ring finger protein 213 (RNF213) variant, a susceptibility locus for moyamoya disease in Asians, have different neuroimaging characteristics in terms of the vessel wall and hemodynamics. Methods and Results We analyzed consecutive patients with ischemic events in middle cerebral artery distribution and relevant plaques of the distal internal carotid artery or proximal middle cerebral artery on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging. Patients with carotid/cardiac sources of embolism or moyamoya disease were excluded. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging features (eg, outer vessel diameters and plaque characteristics) and fractional flow (as measured by adjusted signal intensity ratio on time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography) were compared between RNF213 p.Arg4810Lys variant carriers and noncarriers. Among 144 patients included, 44 (29.9%) had the RNF213 variant. Clinical characteristics, including age, sex, body mass index, and vascular risk factors, were not significantly different between RNF213 variant carriers and noncarriers. However, the outer vessel diameter was smaller in RNF213 variant carriers than in noncarriers (P
Ranked as the eight larger carrier by Alphaliner, HMM is in the midst of a government-supported expansion. The company is targeting a capacity of one million TEU by 2022 through new construction and charters. With its newest deliveries, the company is nearing a capacity of approximately 9000,000 TEU up from 720,000 TEU in 2020.
The announcement of the new order came as the company was also marking the entry into service of the 160,927 DWT HMM Hanul, the last of eight 16,000 TEU containerships built for by Hyundai Heavy Industries Ulsan Shipyard. This class of ships measures 1,200 feet in length, making it according to HMM the largest class of vessel able to transit both the Suez and Panama Canal. They operate at a speed of 22 knots fully loaded with a crew of 22.
During the event celebrating the entry of the HMM Hanul into service, South Korean President Moon Jae-in announced goals to reach a total capacity of 1.5 million TEU by 2030 along with nearly doubling revenues from the country's marine shipping sector. To support the initiative, Moon said that the Korea Ocean Business Corp. and the three state-run financial institutions, Korea Development Bank, Export-Import Bank of Korea, and Korea Asset Management Corp., will create a new $300 million fund to support low-emissions shipbuilding.
