How to get the variable explorer to update while the script is running

Used to there was a way to get the variable explorer to periodically update the global variables, every 2000 milliseconds or so. But I recently reinstalled Spyder and I cannot find this option, so I can't see the variables update on the fly any more. I looked everywhere in preferences and the variable explorer and didn't find what I'm looking for. I hope that this feature is still there! How can I activate it again?
