Intermittent hangs - any ideas?

Apologies if this is already covered, but I've had trouble finding ideas...

I'm running Spyder 3.3.6 as part of an Anaconda installation, on Windows 10 x64.

I have an issue with Spyder just freezing at apparently random times (although I haven't timed them to see if it's regular) for 30-60s at a time. Sometimes it hangs up while running a routine, sometimes while I'm in the middle of typing code, sometimes while I'm working in another window and I only notice when I try to switch to Spyder; note that only Spyder freezes - everything else seems unaffected. It's really frustrating, especially when in the middle of writing/editing, but I haven't found any help (and I think I've already tried re-installing and updating).

I'm having the same issue on Mac OS running py3.7 w/ spyder 4.0 beta. hangs constantly when scrolling/typing

here's what it says on the console.

hangs of a minute+ sound about right. Is no-one else seeing this??

There have been several bugfixes regarding performance for the 4.0.1 release expected to be out in a few weeks.
