Hi

In the past, the message inside Spyder announcing an update provided steps to follow for conda.

The new announcement does not.  When I try and follow the website instructions at
they fail.

EnvironmentNameNotFound: Could not find conda environment: spyder-env
You can list all discoverable environments with `conda info --envs`.

The only Conda envs listed are ones I have created for projects ... now what do I do to upgrade?

Current system info:

* Spyder version: 5.5.6  (conda)
* Python version: 3.11.5 64-bit
* Qt version: 5.15.2
* PyQt5 version: 5.15.10
* Operating System: Linux-5.15.0-119-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.35

Thanks
Derek

Hi,

The link you referenced is to update Spyder with conda, not installing it. The link for that is:

https://docs.spyder-ide.org/current/installation.html#installing-with-conda

If you follow the instructions there then you'll be able to easily install Spyder 6.

Cheers,
Carlos

Hi

Yes, I have already been using Spyder for many years now and updates have always worked before - but now I cannot update to version 6.  I don't want to install; I want to upgrade.

Thanks
Derek

Hi,

If you want to update via the defaults channel, then you’ll have to wait months (maybe three or perhaps even six) for that because that’s the time the Anaconda team takes these days to update Spyder. And, by the way, we can’t do anything about it because we’re not affiliated to Anaconda.

The instructions I referenced in my previous email make use of the conda-forge channel, which is always up to date. But, since defaults and conda-forge packages are binary incompatible, you need to create a new environment for the update. Furthermore, you also need to install in that env all packages you need for your work from conda-forge.

Cheers,
Carlos

Thanks Carlos

I am obviously missing something key, as I cannot understand why the previous update approach - which has always "just worked" - seems to have been abandoned.  I did not have to wait 3 or 6 months; there was simply a short command provided on the update dialog box to copy & run.

Cheers
Derek

Hi,

How did you install Spyder? Since you posted you're using 5.5.6, it seems you didn't install through Anaconda.

Cheers,
Carlos

Hi

AFAIK, I installed via conda - here is the extract related to Spyder from its package list:

$ conda list
# packages in environment at /home/derek/miniconda3:
#
# Name                    Version                   Build    Channel
spyder                    5.5.6           py311h38be061_0    conda-forge
spyder-kernels            2.5.2           unix_pyh707e725_0  conda-forge

Thanks
Derek

Hi,

You used conda-forge, as I suspected, which is really good.

Then you should be able to update by simply running this command:

    conda install spyder=6

Cheers,
Carlos

It did work!  It lost a few panes but it was easy to restore them.

Now running version Spyder version: 6.0.1  (conda)

Thanks for your help Carlos.
