Windows 7
WinPython-64bit-3.4.3.5Qt5

When I start up spyder with a fresh WinPython install without the internet, IPython will not come up (hold indefinitely without loading).  If I start WinPython's IPython Qt Console, that will hold as well, not giving any information.  If I use the "WinPython Command Prompt" and type in "ipython", It will start up with or without the internet.

Both work if I am connected to the internet.  What is up?

Hi John,

I don't have this behaviour on my machine.
Could you redo the experiment on another PC than the one you tested with that issue ?

retrying from a blank install, I get this:

"(Spyder updates) Unable to connect to the internet .... click <OK>"

So:
- on this version this annoying default of Spyder was maybe not yet disabled
- open WinPython-64bit-3.4.3.5Qt5\settings\.spyder-py3\spyder.ini

replace "check_updates_on_startup = True"
per "check_updates_on_startup = False"

save and retry

Yes that is annoying. I would like to see that changed to False by
default. Allowing programs to call home should be something that is left
to the users discretion, not the programs.

Hi,

Two things:

1. The option to look for updates can be turned off in an easier way. You need to go to

    Preferences > General > Updates

    and un-check the option called

    "Check for updates on startup"

2. We are not planning to turn off this option because we want most people to use Spyder latest version.

Cheers,
Carlos

It could just as easily be turned on from the off state.

Unfortunately in software, new version means new bugs, so it should be
left to the user when they want to update. Also by no means should the
program stop working because it cannot connect to the Internet.

Hi,

1. Spyder is not installing a new version as it becomes available, it just informs users about its availability. So it's still up to the user to decide when to update or not.

2. The fact that the IPython console can't start if there's no Internet connection is not Spyder's fault, but a bug in qtconsole itself. So it should be reported here:

    https://github.com/jupyter/qtconsole

Cheers,
Carlos

Must be a Qt5 thing, because I do not see this on Qt4.
