Microsoft Defender has often been subjected to criticisms related to privacy concerns, performance issues, and intrusive behavior in recent versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems. Microsoft Defender features cloud file analysis and file submission under Microsoft Spynet Membership which eventually became Microsoft Advanced Protection Service (MAPS) when opted in with basic or advanced membership collects user data and sends to Microsoft which arises privacy concerns among users.[77][78] The cloud integration of Microsoft Defender also rose concerns among privacy advocates. The MsmpEngine of Microsoft Defender in recent versions of Windows was found to be using high amounts of system resources, especially CPU Resources when Real-time protection and scheduled scan is configured to be turned on.[79] This issue is more apparent in PCs with Intel CPUs.[80] Microsoft defender is configured by default to take up 50% of the system's CPU resources available by default, although this can be configured using Group Policy Editor along with limiting the process of MsmpEngine to use a Low Priority Process during a Realtime Scan and customizing scheduled scans.[81][82] Recent Windows Versions also deeply integrated Microsoft Defender with the operating system using mechanisms like Early Boot Anti-Malware, Tamper Protection, etc., making it almost impossible to remove or uninstall. Although these are useful to prevent malware from disabling or removing the antivirus itself, they also lead to frustration among users who utilize and seek 3rd party alternatives.[83][84][85][86] Microsoft Defender has also been found to annoy users with intrusive behavior; multiple users have reported a prompt to set up a Microsoft account with Windows while others have claimed to be nagged by a similar prompt to set up or sign into a Microsoft account for Onedrive.[87][88][89] In late-July 2020, Microsoft Defender began to classify modifications of the hosts file that blocks Microsoft telemetry and data collection servers as being a severe security risk.[90][91]

We're currently facing some issues in our current environment, because we have globalprotect set to block network access unless it is connected. This has worked well for us from a security standpoint, but now that we have started looking at client isolation with Windows Defender, when a client becomes isolated, it is unable to communicate back to defender to deisolate, and GP cannot authenticate to get itself on the network. The only way to get the client back online is to disable GP or uninstall it.

I have found plenty of advice about how to do this (by allowing controlled folder access) but in the latest windows 10 the on screen options have changed and I cannot find a way of preventing Windows Defender from blocking my attempts to edit libre office files. Surely I am not facing this problem alone?

I had this windows defender pop up message again. This time, there was an audio addition. I rebooted and it has not popped up again. How do I make sure it has not hiding some where on my hard drive or any where else?

If you crave airtight malware protection along with easy-to-schedule scans, a fair number of extra goodies, lots of customization options and a superlight system load, get Kaspersky Security Cloud Free. If you just want better defenses than what Defender offers, try the no-muss-no-fuss Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition.

Not all these brands mentioned offer free antivirus software, but of those who do, Kaspersky comes out on top with perfect scores. Next up is Bitdefender, which got all the widespread malware in those two-plus years but missed some zero-day bugs in three instances.

Tests by the Austrian lab AV-Comparatives are much more sensitive to false positives, and in those, Windows Defender racked up too many: a total of 74 in four monthly tests from February to May 2019, and 58 from July through October 2019. Kaspersky got zero false positives for the entire year; Bitdefender got four and Avast and AVG 13 each.

Kaspersky's results were mixed, with 100% in the first and third set of tests, but only 99.1% in the second. Bitdefender got 99.9%, 99.7% and 99.5%, respectively, and Avast and AVG brought up the rear with 99.2%, 99.3% and 99.7% each.

Among other free antivirus programs, Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition's full scan slowed the system by 26% from the post-installation background (not the baseline), and Avast Free Antivirus caused a 24% loss.

You can view Windows Defender's scan history anytime you want, and if you're notified that it has blocked malware, you can view that information too. To fire up the Windows Defender Security Center, just hit Start, type "defender," and then select "Windows Defender Security Center."

Overall, Windows Defender offers a pretty good malware scanner, but each feature it includes is done better by competitors. If you want the essential protections, Windows Defender is a good place to start, but otherwise, check out competitors like Norton or Bitdefender.

Microsoft does not want Defender to be turned off completely. Therefore, when defender is turned off, windows update or windows component is trying to repair Defender and as a result Defender may become corrupt. Of course a malicious program may also corrupt Defender completely. (If there is no different security software in windows, when Defender is turned off)
Microsoft is constantly taking new measures because it does not want Defender to be turned off. There is a possibility that Windows Defender may be corrupted among these measures. Therefore We will no longer update this program

AV-Comparatives' July-October 2021 Real-World Protection Test placed Microsoft equal eighth (with Bitdefender and VIPRE) out of 17, for instance, with a protection rating of 99.7%. Okay, that's not leading-edge - Trend Micro, Panda and Norton all blocked 100% of threats - but we can't really complain about an antivirus which 'only' does as well as Bitdefender (especially when it's free.)

For example, one group of tests involves using trusted Windows apps to download malicious files, a common scripting trick. Bitdefender and Kaspersky realized there was a problem purely from the behavior, and killed the process before it could download the file. Microsoft Defender accepted the behavior, allowed the download, and only raised the alarm when it realized the file was malicious. It still protected us, this time, but perhaps wouldn't have done if the threat were brand new.

Offline scan does run during the Windows boot process. Other antivirus tools that offer a similar boot-time scan typically boot into Linux, so there's not even a faint chance Windows-based malware could run. Bitdefender's Rescue Environment makes Linux-based malware removal particularly simple.

Antivirus tools don't receive a numeric score or letter grade from the researchers at AV-Comparatives. An antivirus that passes a test gets Standard certification; one that doesn't pass gets the label Tested. Those that do more than the minimum can rate Advanced or Advanced+. I follow three of this lab's many tests, and Microsoft appears in the latest report for all three. Microsoft Defender receives one Standard, one Advanced, and one Advanced+ rating, a decent showing, if not outstanding. Bitdefender Antivirus Free, Avast, and AVG reach Advanced+ in all three, while Avira, Kaspersky, McAfee AntiVirus Plus, and Norton manage two Advanced+ ratings.

The other test from this lab measures defense against a full range of malware types. In this test, an app that completely thwarts all the malware attacks earns Level 1 certification. An app that remediates the attacks within 24 hours gets Level 2 certification. Along with Bitdefender and Malwarebytes, Defender reaches Level 1 certification. All but one of the remaining apps manage Level 2.

Each lab uses its own scoring system, which makes comparisons tough. I've devised an algorithm that maps them all to a 10-point scale and generates an aggregate score. Bitdefender leads the pack with a perfect 10 based on scores from all four labs. Also tested by all four, Avira reach 9.4 points and Microsoft Defender manage 9.2. Avast One Essential and Norton AntiVirus Plus match Avira\u2019s 9.4 points but were only tested by three labs.

Detects the usage of "reg.exe" to add Defender folder exclusions. Qbot has been seen using this technique to add exlcusions for folders within AppData and ProgramData. This rule is adapted from _creation/proc_creation_win_reg_defender_exclusion.yml

Windows defender is a built-in antivirus and antimalware solution provided by Microsoft for Windows operating systems. It helps protect your computer against various threats such as viruses, spyware, ransomware, and other malicious software.
