Froot Loops is a sweetened, fruit-flavored breakfast cereal made by WK Kellogg Co for the United States, Canadian, and Caribbean markets and Kellanova for the rest of the world. The brand was solely owned by the original Kellogg Company before it spun off its North American cereal division as WK Kellogg Co in late 2023.[1] The fruit-flavored cereal pieces are ring-shaped, with a variety of bright colors.

Kellogg's introduced Froot Loops in 1963.[4] Originally, there were only red, orange and yellow loops; green, blue and purple loops were added during the 1990s, with blue being introduced last in 1996.

The loops all share the same fruit-blend flavor.[5][6] Different production methods are used in the UK, where the company misleadingly sold the idea that each individual loop color was a different flavor.[citation needed]

Toucan Sam has been the mascot of Froot Loops since its first appearance. Toucan Sam is a blue anthropomorphic toucan; the colors of his bill correspond to the three original Froot Loop colors.[7] He is portrayed as having an uncanny ability to smell Froot Loops from great distances and locates a concealed bowl of the cereal while intoning "Follow my nose! It always knows!"[8] or "Follow my nose! For the fruity taste that shows!"

Kellogg's made several varieties of snack foods, including snack bags called Snack Ums. Snack Ums were similar to the cereal but larger. Their slogan was "Super-sized bites with deliciously intense natural fruit flavors" and "Flavor Bursting!"[10] Froot Loops-branding by Kellogg's was also used with the Froot Loops cereal bar,[11] and in 2021 Froot Loops Pop-Tarts.

In 2012, Kellogg's introduced Froot Loops to the UK market for a limited time with only the secondary colors (orange, green, and purple), as natural color substitutes for red, yellow, and blue could not be found. The recipe also differed from the US version. Kellogg's stated that "due to European legislation we have been unable to produce Froot Loops to the same specifications as the US product. The formulations are different, including sugar and salt levels and the UK version has been produced with natural food additives and flavorings which will account for the differences in appearance and taste between the two products." The UK Froot Loops are also larger in size compared with their American counterparts, and due to the different method of formulation, are a much coarser cereal. In September 2015, Kellogg's removed Froot Loops from the UK market due to a lack of demand for the cereal, although in 2017, a special Unicorn Froot Loops limited edition was released in the UK.[12] As of 2019, special limited edition Unicorn Froot Loops, Mermaid Froot Loops, and Baby Shark Froot Loops cereals have been made available.

Then you have Red 40, and a host of other artificial colours. BHT, or Butylated hydroxytoluene is a petroleum-based antioxidant used for freshness, but once again, the UK version manages to mysteriously not need it. It is possible that the natural colours (such as the carotene in the orange loops) are doing double duty, as they have strong antioxidant properties themselves.

Essentially, UK Froot Loops are quite unhealthy on their own, but in moderation you could fit them in to a reasonably healthy diet. US Froot Loops are a comparative nutritional void, laced with a variety of suspect artificial substances with links to hyperactivity and cancer.

Just bought 5 Cartons as I miss my froot loops (i only ever lived in NY for 3 years but got hooked on them) I happen to have one small individual american version in the pantry which I smuggled of the last cruise ship I was on and can tell you that SADLY the British version tastes absolutely vile. It not only looks different (probably less food colors) but it tastes not fruity and also rather salty. In this case i say give me the American version anytime!

on taste the US fruit loops wins hands down, UK ones are to crunchy seem to have very little taste at all. I got back from Florida a few weeks ago and bought some back with me and when i seen Tesco selling them i bought a few boxes and they are nothing a like in appearance taste or texture.

Who remembers those chalky, pastel candy necklaces we wore as a kid? You know, the ones where after gnawing a few of the candies off, you ended up with a sticky, wet elastic string around your neck? ?

This version is just a bit more toddler friendly and a little less heavy on the sugar. It also is a great way to practice fine motor skills, colors, and counting. (Not to mention its a built in snack!)

I started by adding one Froot Loop to each bowl, and let Reagan sort the rest from a big bowl to practice her colors. We named the colors together as she sorted, and worked on counting how many were in each bowl.

To create the necklace, I tied a knot around one froot loop in the end of the twine, and I taped the toothpick to the other end to make it easier to thread through the cereal. For older children, this would also be a great opportunity to create and discuss patterns with the colors.

Add it together with a bunch of stuff. I really can't answer substitution questions, I'm afraid. I made 6 different formulations of the recipe before I came up with this one, and I'm sticking with it. Feel free to experiment, though!

Place the dough between two pieces of unbleached parchment paper, and roll until the dough is no less than 1/4 inch thick. With the small end of a large, plain piping tip, cut rounds out of the dough.

With either a toothpick or a plain #2 piping tip, press a small hole in the center of each round of dough. If using a toothpick, move it in a tight circular motion to widen the hole or it will seal up during baking.

Place the baking sheet in the center of the preheated oven, and bake for 4 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. If any of the centers have closed during baking, gently prod them back open with a toothpick.

Turn the oven temperature down to 250 degrees F, and place the baking sheet back in the center of the oven to dry out (and become crisp) for about 7 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely on the baking sheet. The loops will crisp further as they cool.

So, whats next (after the cookbook, of course)? My vote is for tweaking something else we all loved when we were kids but have forgotten. Ooh, or figuring out a way to make mini-pot-pies like Marie Callendar does them, all microwaveable from the freezer and tasty. (I miss you, my gluten-rich friends).

Hmm. I guess my big one was trying to figure out how to make single servings I could pop in the microwave at work. I wonder if I made pupusa style with the filling if it would work. So many things to ponder on.

Hi, Anneke,
I agree that would be interesting. I hope someone decides to do the analysis (not me!). ;)
Seriously, the Cinnamon Toast Crunch guys are so good I could eat those every single day and never get tired of them. These little loops are a close second for me. I foresee your breaking down and making those at some point. Resistance is futile!

Ive made these before and YUMMO! Going to use trix next time and the apple jacks. Have you used golden grahams and semi sweet chocolate morsels to make SMORES? You make them the same way as yours, when mixing to place in bowl while not as hot stir in chocolate so it doesnt melt. THEY ARE SOOOO GOOD. Looky there I spelled so wrong. Have a fantastic day!

My daughter and I just finished making these with the new Unicorn loops for her Girl Scout meeting tomorrow. They are cute and will be fun for 8 1st graders. A nice easy recipe for a weeknight! Thanks!
