Hello all,

Please find below an opportunity for some fun and intellectually
stimulating social-distance approved interaction, courtesy of SPS National!
Please note this event is happening *Tuesday, March 17, at 11am Alaska time*
.

Additionally, keep an eye on your email for updates on SPS activities;
obviously with the many sudden and drastic changes happening at UAF, many
of our normal activities are cancelled for the remainder of the semester,
but that doesn't mean there's not still projects we can work on! And of
course, if SPS can assist in any way with easing this transition, please
contact myself or one of the other officers and we'll see if there's a way
we can help!

Best,
Evans Callis

Hello!

I hope you are healthy and safe. I am reaching out to you because you are
listed as the president of your SPS chapter (if this is going to the wrong
person, please forward it along) and SPS Nationals would like to ask you to
spread the following information to your chapter. Over the coming weeks,
we are going to hold a couple virtual talks through Zoom that anyone can
join (up to the Zoom participant limit which is 300 people). We will also
be recording the talks and putting them on our YouTube channel for those
who cannot attend/if the session fills up.

Our first talk will be by Susan White, interim director of the Statistical
Research Center at AIP. It should be a fun and interactive talk! See the
details below:

You can’t handle the truth!

*“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”* Unknown
(often attributed to Benjamin Disraeli or Mark Twain)

Come join us for a fun look at statistics. We’ll consider some
counterintuitive statistical outcomes and ponder how we can prove something
with statistics. We will be meeting up for fun and fellowship, not a dry
academic lecture. Please join me *Tuesday, March 17, at 3 p.m. EDT.*

About the presenter: Susan White is currently the interim director of the
Statistical Research Center at the American Institute of Physics (AIP).
Prior to joining AIP, she taught statistics and operations management for
twenty years. Baseball is her favorite sport – possibly because baseball is
guaranteed to have a statistic for just about any situation.

*Zoom Information:*

AIP SPS is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
