This field isn't used for anything. It's intended to store the price you pay for the product, so that it's there and visible if you are adjusting prices. If you don't need this field, free to leave it blank.

but isn't that be the master price, or price of each variant? if it is useless, why did the spree guys set such a field? is there any OFFICIAL doc or ref to this?

Let me explain this. You're got supplier price list where you got prices for products. That is the price that you pay to your supplier for the product. But in you store you set your own price adding additional costs and some overprice to make income. Cost Price - is the price that you pay to supplier. Master Price - is the price youre client pays to you. This is used to calculate the profit you make selling products.
