to spread the word(list)
hi everyone,

thanks so much for your interest in spread the word(list) and welcome to our october update!

as a reminder, we highly recommend that you keep your personal edits in a separate .dict or .txt file, so you can update your spreadthewordlist file every month without losing your personal changes.

and: as always, we want to link to your puzzles if you filled them using our wordlist! let us know if we should include something of yours in our gallery.

a few notes about the update and in general:

1. new words

after adding crossword answers that appeared in september and slightly tweaking our scoring algorithm, we now have 197,702 answers, with 83,738 scored 50 or higher. this is an increase of 1,781 and 1,045 from last month, respectively, and represents us adding 4,449 new answers at 50+ and lowering 3,404 answers below 50. some of our favorite new answers at 50+ are ARO, UBE, IKID, ELOTE, GOD YES, NO JOKE, BURRATA, TALLBOY, DUOLINGO, UZOADUBA, WEIRDHUH, VERYFUNNY, WATCHPARTY, ROLLWITHIT, KARAOKEBARS, THEJURYISOUT, KINDREDSPIRITS, and BESTILLMYHEART.

2. uppercase versions

we've had a couple requests for equivalent files with uppercase answers instead of lowercase answers, and you can find those here (this is linked from the wordlist page).

3. "&" bug fix

there was a bug where we were removing ampersands instead of converting them to AND strings, so last month's version might've had something like HAPPYHEALTHY. now that answer would be HAPPYANDHEALTHY.

4. blocklist

we are always tinkering with our blocklist; please don't hesitate to let us know if you come across something offensive that shouldn't be in the wordlist. in your personal edit file, you can always add words back in; for example, we've tried to make the wordlist fairly family-friendly, but if you want to write blue crosswords, feel free to add that content in yourself :).

5. other wordlists

our resources page has a bunch of (wait for it) resources for you, including other wordlists. for more words, definitely check those out!

we're always happy to hear your feedback; please reach out anytime!

happy filling!
