Has anyone had any luck sourcing an appropriate switch for this
project? I have previously designed and built (on breadboard) a simple
radio trigger/timer. I got as far as producing an enclosure but the
project has stalled as I needed a navigation switch .

I presume the plan for SPOT is to have some sort of navigation switch
to use the menu - can't see any controls on the pictures posted so far
though.

Great looking project - if I can get all the bits I will definately be
building at least one pair.

Hi,

I found mine in a german (Berlin based) shop: www.segor.de. I've attached a picture with the details.

It would be helpful if anyone could find non-german sources for this. I had to search quite a while. I'll add them to the web page.

Cheers
Till

I've got mine off Ebay:

Notice that this switch is SMD and has a cap is included.

I've also got the part in an Eagle library.

Digi-key has a SMT version in stock.  Actually, a few but in smt only.

Search "joystick", "navigation joystick", "2 axis with select".

The thru-hole would be nicer to proto with though...

Hi - well I didn't expect so many replies so quickly! What a fantastic group.

I will have a good look at those links and get a few samples. I probably didn't make my original comments specific enough though - what I really wanted - and what I think would be good for this project too,  was a self adhesive navigation membrane switch. This would make the assembly process so much easier and it would be simpler to ensure the unit is splashproof as well as looking very smart. You would have thought that one of the manufacturers would have produced a model with a simple up/down left/right +/- select layout. I can find a four way version on RS but not a five key type. It would be so useful in all sorts of mcd projects with a display interface. Unfortunately the unit costs for small runs are prohibitive as the tooling costs etc are massive. Building the thing and making it look half decent is where most of my projects fall apart  - sometimes literally :(

For people looking for another source:

Feels quite firm and good.
