hi,
i am trying to assemble my first spot now and need some explanations.
on the picture of tills spot (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/
3309/3421174824_d302917621.jpg) i find several connections:

INT1
GND

VCC
GND

VCC
RES
D/C
CS

LEFT
RIGHT
UP
DOWN
TEST
GND

GND
SCK
CAP
SI

GND
SCK
MISO
MOSI
RES
VCC

GND is ground and goes to the negative battery side, VCC is power and
goes to the positive battery side, right?
LEFT , RIGHT, UP, DOWN, TEST, GND, are the connections for the
joystick, right?
INT1 and GND is the shutter connection, right?
But where comes the rest from and where does it go to? On the picture
of the display (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/
3298/3420363561_88418eef29.jpg) I found some of the connectionnames.
There are 8 connections at the display, so it looks like the
connections VCC, RES, D/C, CS, and GND, SCK, CAP, SI, are for the
display, but which one is for SDIN, VOUT and SCE? These are contacts
on the diplay picture which I can´t find on any other description.
The last six connections on the list above are for the ISP I guess.
A little more documentation for greenhorns like me would be very nice
and helpfull ;-)

The second question is more mechanical: How did you disassemble the
display, how do you connect it to the case and how did you got a
"clean" hole in the case for the display? I got my displays today,
they are looking like this:
http://cgi.ebay.de/Original-Nokia-3310-3330-Display_W0QQitemZ230373765590QQcmdZViewItemQQptZHandy_Zubeh%C3%B6r?hash=item35a358b1d6&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
, I tried to disassamble one of them and I got a grey glas with no
contacts at all at the end - so it looks like I made something totaly
wrong.

Tim is right: the pin descriptions must be improved. Anybody care to
help? I'll copy the list into the wiki. Some of the questions have
been answered here before I think...

Tim, I fear your second question is much harder to answer. Because you
did everything right. Connecting cables to the display and fitting it
into the case is a mess and cost me more time than the entire
programming. Also it's extremely error-prone and frustrating if it
doesn't work. At least you can be sure that it's not a software bug if
it doesn't work.

There are two ways I think. Plus one uncertain option...

1. Simple but not good-looking
Do not remove the glass carrier from the metal and plastic enclosure,
solder the cables to the golden contacts. Fitting this into a case
will be much harder (if it's supposed to look non-messy) because of
the the metal enclosure.

2. Frustrating but good-looking
Disassemble the display (as you did), take the black plastic-bit (the
one with the golden spring-type contacts wrapped around it) and try to
glue it to the glass carrier. Good luck! It worked for me exactly
once. I've tried several other methods... help and ideas would be
greatly appreciated!!!!

3. (non-verified!) Simple and good-looking
I've read reports of a display sub-type where the connectors are glued
to the glass carrier already. This would simplify things a lot!

BTW: This is the reason why I'm quite interested in building simpler
devices without display.

Cheers

the subtype you are talking about is used?

But as I said: I've never tried this myself.

Hi Till,

so can you tell me where to connect the pins
VOUT
SDIN
SCE
from the display? Looks like this is the last step to finish the
hardwarework for me.
Now I am gonna bomb you all with questions about the software ;-)

Hi Tim,

the display has the following connectors:

VCC (power +)
SCK (SPI clock)
SDIN (SPI data line)
D/C (data / command)
SCE (chip select)
GND (power -)
VOUT (over capacitor to power -)
RES (reset)
On the circuit board you can find two 4-pin connectors for the display
(compare hardware doc, 3rd picture from the bottom):

VCC --> VCC
RES --> RES
D/C --> D/C
CS --> SCE

GND --> GND
SCK --> SCK
CAP --> VOUT
SI --> SDIN

Hope this helps. I'll put it in the docs.

Cheers
Till
