What do you guys think about assessment in teaching Sport Psych?

What is better, a performance based assessment in which they have to
apply the skills? If so, how do we measure this?

OR a pencil-and-paper, traditional classroom assessment like an exam?

Hey David -
For my assessment I am having my students apply what they have learned over the semester in that they are going to the different Elementary Schools in the Davis High area and teaching them a lesson. I don't know if this will work as well as I hope but it is worth a try.  Let me know if you have other ideas.

I do a few quizzes over the main points just to make them review them.  3 times in during the sememster I give them a test--meaning, I choose one of the Disney "real life" movies about sports and have them identify numerous examples in the movie about the different topics we have discussed in class .  Towards the end of the semester we go on a field trip to a ropes course that lasts all day.  At the ropes course the instructors do a good job pushing the kids past their "limits".  The students find the experience well worth the money they pay to go and really learn "hands on" about a lot of the topics we cover.

I like both of those ideas. I do mine kind of like Jana with quizzes
and the the movie thing. I really like the ropes course idea. Where do
you go, Jana?

I also like the class project by teaching an elementary school idea,
from Preston. Let us know how well it works. It made me think of
another idea. What of the class (or groups) did a project where they
put on a clinic or workshop for one of the school's teams or
performance groups?

Another thing I do is have 3 table tennis tournaments during the
semester: 1 singles tourney (after learning "focus," with a lot of
music and distraction), 1 doubles tourney (after learning "team
harmony"), and 1 final tourney.

Great ideas.

I do things very similar in that I have 5 tests and for each test I pick a movie where they have to pick out the various aspects about Sports Psych. I also have competitions very similar to David, but instead of just Ping Pong, I have my students compete in a foul shooting competition, Darts, and today we played mini golf.
Is there a possibility that we could pitch in and get one of the Jazz players or an other professional athlete to speak?

That would be awesome!!! I'm all for it, perhaps at some central location. Do you have any connections or anything, Preston?

Not really, but I could start to call the P.R. people and see if there is any opportunities available.

The ropes course that I go to is in American Fork--outside in an 11 acre wooded area.  The cost is usually $35 per kid.  You can reach the guy who does is: c...@cammosher.com.   I also have a hypnotherapist that comes in for relaxation and teaches them how to really visualize and relax.

We have a Jenga tournament for focus and a blindfolded one for teamwork.

I would love to work with you guys on getting a pro player in to speak--if I can do anything let me know!
