"A research paper presents the results of your investigations on a
selected topic. Based on your own thoughts and the facts and ideas you
have gathered from a variety of sources, a research paper is a creation
that is uniquely yours. The experience of gathering, interpreting, and
documenting information, developing and organizing ideas and conclusions,
and communicating them clearly will prove to be an important and
satisfying part of your education"

Writing a Research Paper
The Writing Lab and the OWL at Purdue University

"There will come a time in most students' careers when they are assigned a
research paper. Such an assignment often creates a great deal of unneeded
anxiety in the student, which may result in procrastination and a feeling
of confusion and inadequacy. This anxiety frequently stems from the fact
that many students are unfamiliar and inexperienced with this genre of
writing. Never fear-inexperience and unfamiliarity are situations you can
change through practice! Writing a research paper is an essential aspect
of academics, and should not be avoided on account of one's anxiety. In
fact, the process of writing a research paper can be one of the more
rewarding experiences one may encounter in academics. What is more, many
students will continue to do research throughout their careers, which is
one of the reasons this topic is so important"

http://writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/PlanResearchPaper.html

This page lists some of the stages involved in writing a library-based
research paper.

Although this list suggests that there is a simple, linear process to
writing such a paper, the actual process of writing a research paper is
often a messy and recursive one, so please use this outline as a flexible
guide.

A Guide for Writing Research Papers based on Styles
Recommended byThe American Psychological Association
Prepared by the Humanities Department as part of
The Guide to Grammar and Writing
and the Arthur C. Banks Jr. Library
Capital Community College
Hartford, Connecticut
http://www.ccc.commnet.edu/apa/

This guide is based on recommendations of the fifth edition of the
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association published by
the American Psychological Association (2001). This online publication is
by no means a substitute for that book, which is an extensive resource for
students engaged in serious research in psychology and the social and
behavioral sciences. If online guides like this one - and other summaries
of APA style in composition textbooks, etc. - do not suffice, students
should purchase the APA Publication Manual for their own use
(approximately $27 for the recommended spiral-bound edition) or borrow it
from a library.

"Most university courses involve some sort of extended writing assignment,
usually in the form of a research paper. Papers normally require that a
student identify a broad area of research related to the course, focus the
topic through some general background reading, identify a clear research
question, marshal primary and secondary resources to answer the question,
and present the argument in a clear and creative manner, with proper
citations.

That is the theory, at least. But how do you go about doing it all? This
brief guide provides some answers."

"The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (1977; 7th ed., 2009) is
a publication of the Modern Language Association of America, based on The
MLA Style Manual (3rd ed., 2008). According to the MLA, since its first
publication in 1985, the MLA Style Manual has been "the standard guide for
graduate students, scholars, and professional writers" ("What Is MLA
Style?").

Like the MLA Style Manual, the MLA Handbook is an academic style guide
widely used in the United States, Canada, and other countries, providing
guidelines for writing and documentation of research in the humanities,
such as English studies (including the English language, writing, and
literature written in English); the study of other modern languages and
literatures, including comparative literature; literary criticism; media
studies; cultural studies; and related disciplines ("What Is MLA Style?").
Released in March 2009, the seventh edition of the MLA Handbook (like its
previous editions) is addressed primarily to secondary-school and
undergraduate college and university teachers and students ("What Is MLA
Style?"). According to the MLA, "For over half a century, the MLA Handbook
is the guide millions of writers have relied on," and "It provides an
authoritative presentation of MLA documentation style for use in student
writing."
