I found out what those dang pods do.
you know how in creature stage when you advance the other creatures
advance too.
I think this is the mechanisim for that.
I watched them slowly take over a nest of one critter and replace it
with another.

So that's what they are...
I've never hung around long enough to see anything come out of the
pods, but I have seen creatures turn into pods.
