Hey guys, it's been a while. I'm not sure if any of you heard or not,
but a few days ago the first announcement was made for the next Spore-
based game, "Darkspore". As far as I know, it's a stand-alone title,
is an top-down/3rd-person(?) RPG, and the most major thing it borrows
from Core Spore is the creature editor. Oh, and did I mention that the
creatures in this one look waaaay more intimidating then before?
(check out dat dere Plasma Sentinel!) Anyways, to check out some more
details, just head on over to www.darkspore.com, or whatever you can
find on the web.

So, any thoughts on this one? (also, the team, which Thomas Vu is a
lead designer of(for Darkspore), said they are still planning to do
stuff more related to Core Spore)

Oh, and all those template contests that you may or may not have seen
over on the Sporum and Spore.com? They had those so they could have
some user-made creatures shipped in-game as enemies.

As dark and as "cool" as they make it look, I still am not impressed
with the direction the Spore franchise has headed. An RPG? I was
hoping for expanded control of my civilization, choosing the language
my creatures spoke, or their philosophical perspectives, or the fabled
underwater stage.

This, sadly, is just more of a reason for me to ignore the Spore
franchise until they decide to cater more toward the original concept
of the game *Survival of the fittest - from cell to galactic
conquerer".

I'm still waiting for them to start bringing the original concepts
back in through expansions, and I'm beginning to think it will never
happen.

^ Like I said, I do remember them mentioning in an interview or
whatever that they still have plans for "Core" Spore.

Personally, I don't feel so bad that this game isn't directed as much
toward the original concept. I mean, Will Wright did kinda want to
make some sort of "world" or "franchise" or whatever out of Spore, and
I don't think one goes about doing that by stacking all your
metaphorically-available crates in a corner.

I think that they (Maxis) are starting to reach out into other areas
to see how Spore will fare in them, not to move the whole focus over
to them. Think of it this way: Imagine Spore's history as a tree.
Somewhere along the developed trunk of the Core/GodGame concept, out
juts a green branch of the mainly-RPG concept. This branch is not a
concrete departure, but just a literal branch. It may or may not
mature enough for it to develop its own branches, as only time will
tell that. And the reason the trunk is developed is partially because
of user-integration. It's one thing to have thousands be fans of your
movie, and one thing to have ten-thousands purchase your book, but
it's another thing when hundred-thousands have contributed usable
content to your game. I do have a good feeling Maxis has recognized
that desire for customization, creatability, and etc among us, and
that they are going to bank on that in the future.

So yes, I'd also like to see some more stuff aimed at the fans of the
base concept, but there's probably always gonna be some conflict
between the will of the fanbase and that of the developer. And just
hope that they aren't planning anything for Spore: The Movie. ;)

I just hope that the rpg branch doesn't become so big that it
overshadows the original core concept. Oh, and its good to see you
guys again.
