Now that there's a badge that requires one getting 100% on RobPro's quiz (which  feel was just made to torture people), I was thinking that we could collaborate to share tips on how to perfect it. I heard one tip on this forum that it  helps to zoom in to 125% or 150% to see the numbers better. Does anybody else have tips?

I can definitely say what not to do, don't use a laptop UNLESS there is a mouse to go with it.  Another thing that I think you can do is when you can't find a certain number, skip it IF you see the next number.  Keep going until you catch the number you skip in the corner if your eye.

The mouse tip is a given. If anyone has completed it on a touch pad you deserve more than a badge. Or maybe you just have a laptop with a decent touch pad. I'll re-post what AuroraIllumina posted on a different thread. Try zooming in. I zoomed in to 125% and after 5 or 6 attempts I completed it with 30 seconds to spare. And that was after notching up over 20 attempts before trying the zoom trick.

It's a really hard one, and I'm not sure how I did it. I finished with 2 seconds left when I did it.

But yes, zooming in to about 150% helped me, and I used a mouse.

I never touch the prev/next buttons, but I do keep mental notes of locations in mind when I'm doing it. Sometimes I even keep locations of about 4 numbers ahead in mind or so. (eg. If you are stuck looking for 21, but find all numbers from 22-25 while looking for 21, remember all of them so that you don't waste more time re-looking for them after getting 21.)

Also, the first 9 numbers should never take too long; the single-digit numbers stick out more visibly in their smaller boxes. The quiz doesn't really get easier as you go along though, until you get past 90 or so. I usually start over if I don't get 25 in the first minute or so.

Hi everyone,

I am unfortunately restricted to using a touch-pad, which is unavoidable for now. I have a few problems with this which I'd just like to explain and offer remedies:

Using a touch-pad is difficult due to the fact that it is slower and it is very easy to select the wrong box. After more than the 6 attempts that my profile reveals, I admittedly gave up. It's just not fun on a laptop. I don't know if anybody else who uses Sporcle on a laptop and has tried the quiz feels the same way?

I Sporcle always for fun, but this quiz isn't in my circumstances, it just feels like a grind. I relish a challenge, but on an equal playing field.

I'm pretty sure that it's a great quiz to undertake on a computer monitor, but I'm not sure that this quiz is right for the Badge criteria. Every badge currently, can be completed solo, having fun, without possible problems engaged with any device used. This is what I think badges should stay like, each and every user should have the chance to get them all.

I'm a HUGE fan of badges on Sporcle and look forward to more, I want the opportunity to attain the utmost amount of badges possible (without restrictions that is).

Please don't take this as me accusing you for making a bad quiz RobPro,  because it's good! I just think that quizzes required for badges need to fit into a niche type of group, played without encountering any issues.

Sporcle, you may wish to consider replacing the quiz to avoid any more problems? If this is the case, might I suggest Simple Math Minefield or Multiplication Table as they are similar in genre and offer a challenge.

Thanks,

 WackyZacky (Issak).

I'm stuck using a laptop too. I have to say that I have no problems with the touchpad. I've been using a touchpad for roughly 8 years though so it's 2nd nature to me.
My problem is I get stuck looking for a number way too often. Though to be honest I never noticed the next-prev buttons till someone mentioned it. I'm probably focusing too much on the numbers haha.
I find the first 20 numbers extremely easy. The 20s and 30s take me forever before it eases up a little by 40. It gets much easier around 60.
I haven't come close to getting 100 yet though :(

I must say this thread surprises me a bit. I never remembered this quiz being as challenging as you guys say it is. I got the 100 on a laptop on my first try (with 11 seconds to spare). All I remember is that it is important to try to memorize the position of the next few numbers while you are playing. What I mean is that if you are on #55, and you see #58 and #59 nearby, don't forget that you saw them.

It is a hard game - searching through unsorted lists is not easy to do, and the time pressure makes this harder too. For any CompSci people here, playing this game is an O(n^2) operation [or O(n*log n) if you have memory like a computer], but assuming you can't store locations of 100 numbers at once, you pretty much have to scan the 100 numbers every time you do it, and do it 100 times. (This isn't exact as things get quicker towards the end, but it will do as an approximation.) You have 240 seconds to do it, so 2.4 seconds per scan, which is not that long. It helps to remember the locations of the next few numbers, but it's hard to search when the time pressure is on.

Also, unlike all other quiz-taking achievements there are so far (eg. memorizing elements/countries/presidents), this isn't really something you can study for. It's just try, keep trying, and don't stop trying.

(On an unrelated note, I feel sorry for anyone who can easily search through numbers like these but can't type the numbers in 60 seconds.)

I've tried:

- Zooming in so that I can see the numbers better.
- Zooming out so that I have less mouse travel.
- Increasing mouse sensitivity so I can get to buttons faster.
- Lowering screen brightness so I can go 4 minutes without blinking.
- Playing in Internet Explorer in the hope that the timer would be a bit laggy.
- Cheating (as a test).

and still can't get much past 70 on a really good run. I'm starting to suspect it just won't be possible for some people. I have seen some accounts which have played the game over 1,000 times without ever getting close to completing it. It kind of reminds me of a batak test - you need to be able to spot things in your peripheral vision without focusing and looking for them - and I suck at the batak test.

Anyway, it's beginning to become a joy sapping experience now so I'm giving up after about 50 tries. Maybe there should be a badge for anyone who attempts it 100 times without giving up in spite of so many fails. I remember they used to do something similar in old Gran Turismo games. If you kept failing your licence tests, they would eventually give you a special award for being lame and just let you pass.

I used control-f. I'll admit it. I'f I was looking for stuff in the twenties, I'd make it highlight everything with '2'. It made it much easier.
