Subject: KYAA CLARIFICATION

Dearest KCCNA,

Our names are Marilynn Pathiyil (from Chicago) and Priya Koppuzhayil (from Houston). We are the two KYAA members organizing some of the youth events at convention and are the ones responsible for the KYAA e-mail that was sent out this week. We were not anticipating all of the confusion and would like to clarify our intentions.

Firstly, we wanted to apologize for the controversy that this e-mail has caused KCCNA, KCYL/Youth committees, and the general Knanaya public. We did not intend for the message to be anonymous. When the e-mail was originally sent, it included an introductory message; this introductory paragraph stated Priya’s name and explained she was a KYAA member. Unfortunately, this part of the original message was not included in the e-mail sent through American Kna, thus it appeared as if the message was sent anonymously.  Additionally, we wanted to clarify what KYAA means. We are the Knanaya Young Adult Alliance and have conducted several programs all over North American cities. Our organization does not have any hierarchy or formal structure therefore we cannot be a part of KCCNA (which requires a constitution and executive hierarchy). We are not a formal convention planning committee. We are simply two volunteers from KYAA collaborating with  KCYL team with the planning of youth events at convention.  Although we do not fall under the KCCNA umbrella, we still follow the KCCNA criteria for inclusion. This means that those who come to our programs are fully Knanaya Catholic or Knanaya Jacobites guests. Additionally, we apologize for sending this e-mail to American Kna. We were under the impression that this was a KCCNA affiliated newsletter and did not know it was a separate entity.

Secondly, the intention of the e-mail was to reassure the concerned parents of our community. We saw an e-mail from a worried parent who expressed their concern about the club events that the Atlanta Youth are hosting. In our e-mail we explained that many youth enjoy these programs and need an environment such as a bar/club to meet and mingle with everyone. We expressed gratitude to the Atlanta Youth for taking this initiative- especially Phillip K who has worked on many aspects of convention. We also shared that KYAA has helped organize a variety of other programs alongside KCYL. Although many young adults enjoy the party scene, there are also many other young adults who prefer to get to know people in an alternative context. For this reason, Priya and I have worked hard to ensure we can create programs that are beneficial to all young adults- not simply the extroverted convention goer!

Our programs are uniquely designed and will include:

·         small group opportunities- for some, it can be easier to talk to others when you are in a small group vs a large crowd.

·         cooperation opportunities- where we must all work together towards a common goal.

·         personal growth opportunities- seminars that discuss relationships and workshops that target communication skills.

·         spiritual opportunities- numerous spiritual programs throughout the weekend that cater to the youth (such as opening mass, closing mass, and adoration).

·         a service opportunity- for us to give back to the senior citizens of our community.

THIS WAS OUR ONLY MISSION AND GOAL. To have programs that provided a variety of opportunities. Every young adult who comes to convention this year should be able to find a program that best suits them. If they are shy, small group events might be an easier environment for them to meet someone. If they are religious, multiple spiritual opportunities would offer them something previous conventions have not. If they are bored with the party scene, activity based programs (such as Top Golf and Escape Room) would allow for them to have new experiences with their peers, etc.

Incidents happen in spaces that lack structure and programming. If we put our money towards good programming that benefits the youth, there would be less of an issue with public indecency and there would also be less money needed for security. If we put our money towards the youth today, we are investing in our community’s growth.

Please understand, we accept responsibilities for the mistakes that we made. We are sorry for any trouble this has caused. But our intention was only to provide some relief for the worried parents and to appeal to the general North American Knanaya population.

We are still in need of financial support of $5,000. If KCCNA cannot support us financially, please forward this e-mail out to the general public on our behalf so that any confusion that the general community is experiencing can be cleared. If there are any parents who understand our mission and cause and who would like to make a donation they can do so by mailing a check made payable to KYAA (500 s. Clinton, Apt 510, Chicago, IL, 60607).

Thank you for your time and understanding,

Marilynn Pathiyil and Priya Koppuzhayil
