So we're not really in trouble but I guess we have to start being careful about things.  I got an email from Matthew Betz. He's in charge of a lot of student club stuff.  Here is the email, along with my reply:

Marcus,

I recently came across a flyer for Spokescouncil which states that "Spokes Council is an East Orlando bike advocacy group made up largely of UCF Students". According to The Golden Rule in The Office of Student Involvement section "Membership in any student organization is limited to any student who is currently paying activity and service fees and is enrolled with the University of Central Florida." Please ensure that you are adhering to this policy for membership in your registered student organization. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Reply from me:

Matthew,
As you know we very recently obtained RSO status. Before getting that status we were trying to be careful in not to call ourselves a UCF club.  The flyers simply have not been updated. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm just letting everyone know what's up. I don't think we're doing anything wrong but I'd rather not draw attention and have us needing to explain ourselves all the time.

You gave him a good response, Marcus!  Keep up the good work.

this was something i was afraid about in becoming an rso. we've had numerous members from rollins, valencia, etc., and no college affiliation in the past and specifically did not want to cater to ucf students. it's not a big problem now since all our regular members are from ucf but i see problems like this creeping up on us.

your response was great marcus. it diffused it pretty quickly i bet

Member is defined by whatever you say it is in the constitution... which would be people who are students... so for them to say otherwise is circular logic/contradictory in itself. The flyer doesn't say anything about "member/s"
I'd just say you are "at UCF" or get rid of the mention of UCF in general.
I wouldn't be overly worried about it... how did he "find" this flyer, anyway? Seems super creepy. There isn't anything they can do about the fact your flyer says that.

The problem was that it said "made up largely of UCF Students", implying that non-UCF students are members, which by the definition in the Golden Rule is not okay.

The reasoning is that A&SF $ which comes from students (who can be official members) shouldn't be spent on not-students (who cannot be official members) who are not contributing to that fund.

As long as you don't spend AS&F $ on people who aren't students you're good.  And if you don't call a lot of attention to the participation of non-students then you won't get bothered about it anyway.  Just be good.

SGA is complicated and bureaucratic.  I think its okay to have non-students participate, but from A&SF just can't be spent on them.  You can do what you want with money that you raise yourselves.

Thanks Christina, that spells it out pretty well.
