If you don't know about the Miro player, you should: http://www.getmiro.com/ It has a good chance of becoming the most-popular player for video and eventually even audio. The organization behind Miro is non-profit and it's an open project.

The player supports "sites" and the only one that's standard is their own "Podcast Directory". We have an opportunity to add SpokenWord.org as an additional "site" and if we do a good job of it and provide valuable integration with the player, there's a chance we can convince the folks behind Miro to include SpokenWord.org as a second "site" with the standard release. I just spoke with Nicholas Reville, Executive DIrector of Miro's parent organization, and he's open to the idea. We have to prove ourselves first, of course.

So I put this out there to anyone who is interested. Want to take a shot at this or work with others who do? You can downloads the source for Miro for Windows, Linux or Mac. I don't have a clue what's involved. It might be nothing more than a configuration option, but obviously getting deeper integration adds even more value.

Let us know if you want to help on this. Thanks.

Hi Doug,
I'd take a run at this for the GTK variant. Any takers for OSX and/or
Windows?

Best,
Chad

Hi, Chad.

That's great! I don't even know what the issues are, so I look to you to tell me what supporting APIs you need. The good news is that you have some time. I'm leaving for three weeks in Kenya on Sunday, so I may not even be able to reply to your messages until after 11/21. But once I'm back, I'll look forward to hearing from you and getting started on the server-side support. You'll have my full attention then. Supporting the APIs is at the top of my to-do list.

And as you say, perhaps others are interested in following what you do so they can take on OS X and Windows versions.

I have not looked at this at all, but I do not think that adding a site
will involve client-side coding. I would imagine it is more of a
configuration/skin file with something server-side (on spokenword) to
support it.

Does anyone have a link to documentation about adding sites to Miro?

Thanks for the links John. Are you a Miro user? Do you use it to
collect from SpokenWord?

Hi Thilo,
RSS Reader functionality aside, I had in mind something more along the
lines of the iTunes-Link utility.

I'm interested in sharing ratings back to SpokenWord via the client
and sharing curated episodes out to "the status-sphere" (e.g.
FriendFeed). I use the ITConversations ballots to rate and
occasionally comment on episodes (http://colgur.posterous.com/blogged-
catching-up-on-my-podcast-list-rypple).

That's my interest in Miro but maybe the current functionality is
sufficient for SpokenWord purposes. It's not my intention to distract
Doug from functionality which will drive more traffic to the site.
Just the opposite actually.

Thanks for any feedback,
Chad

FYI, my goal isn't to drive traffic to the site. I want to encourage use and expansion of the database. If we could enabled multiple clients that used the API and allowed people to get everything they want without visiting the web site, that would be great. It all makes SpokenWord.org more valuable to the world.
